Homosexual age consent?

I seem to recall that on Ricky Gervais' stand up comedy he said the age consent was lowered to 16 in May 2005, someone else I talked to said it was later than that and the internet says it was 2001. A social worker when I was in hospital seemed to think the law was still 18.

So when was the age consent lowered?

Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act commenced Jan 2001. Harmonised and equalised it with heterosex. Age varied prior to that depending on where you were. Different rules applied in NI and Scotland and England and Wales, due to the different legal systems in those countries.

Not sure when. But, age of consent for sexual intercourse is 16. The anomaly is that images of under 18s are illegal, even if sent or shared by the actual person. So the age of consent online is 18.

I thought that doesn't make sense and it should be 18 across the board.

John Major's government reduced the age of homosexual consent from 21 to 18 in 1994. Tony Blair's government reduced it from 18 to 16 in 2001 with certain provisos such as a gay person cannot use a site like this until they are 18.

Thank you for all the replies. I am very fortunate to have missed all that came before. The age restrictions and the illegality before that.

A massive thank you to all that came before and fought for our rights. I grew up in a world where homosexuality is accepted. I have only had one person in my life diminish me for being gay. A massive thank you to you all

This reduction is from 18 to 16 in England and Wales and Scotland, and from 18 to 17 in Northern Ireland. This equalises the age of consent for sexual activity so that it is the same for male homosexuals as for heterosexuals and lesbians ie 16 in England, Wales and Scotland and 17 in Northern Ireland.

If only he’d (allegedly) had that girl in a state where the age of consent is 16 at it is here, and not in Florida where it is 18, it might have saved him a lot of hassle !
