It seems they had their own rules. Ancient Greeks largely accepted male-male relationships, particularly pederasty, as long as the older partner was active and the younger one was not of a comparable status or the child of a citizen. Also not necessarily exclusive relationships. Roman society, however, placed a greater emphasis on the social hierarchy, accepting homosexual acts only when a freeborn, active Roman citizen engaged in sex with a passive un-free worker or foreigner, while considering penetration of another citizen immoral unless with a fellow soldier. There are suggestions that Jesus engaged in this type of sexual relationship with Andrew (the one who Jesus loved) and also a young man in the garden of Gethsemane, although these events are “airbrushed” out by the Catholic Church.

We should not make the mistake of thinking all the ancients thought the same. Or even that people in one place thought the same from one century to the next. But in general the Roman’s felt the Greeks at many points were a bit loose!

I loved G0yguy’s take. These society’s thought more about freeborn vs ensl@ved person than men vs women or adult vs teenager.

As they say the past is a different country; they do things differently there.

Saw quite an interesting programme the other night on one of the history channels. It was about the Sacred Band of Thebes, a fighting force made up of gay couples who were trained up in fierce warfare and to watch each other's backs. Quite interested if a bit long winded like most American documentaries are.
