Another vote for Ultravox - both John Foxx and Midge Ure versions.

And The Passions. Technically, one hit wonders.

"Japan.

Go back to 1979 when Japan recorded the Quiet Life album, and you're listening to the sound of the 1980's being invented ..

Ultravox for sure with JF and Metamatic is still stunning.

I do like Vienna with the other guy too.

Early Human League, OMD, Tubeway Army, Joy Division, PIL, Banshees especially Ju-Ju, Comsat Angels, Talk-Talk.

All brilliant.

I would class most of the above as electronic music? New wave to me was the likes of Boomtown rats, Buzzcocks, Police perhaps, Undertones ect

The lines have got blurred between the two eras over time. My favourite 80's acts were Japan, Talk Talk and Pet Shop Boys. None of which I would have considered New Wave bands. But go on any Facebook New Wave group and all the electro bands are invariably grouped in with the late 70's stuff.

REM were bloody brilliant in the 80s, I got lucky and saw them live early on before they got hits and everybody knew about them. Their early TV appearances were kind of thin sounding but they were really kickass live.

They and The Smiths kept guitar led music alive through a desert of crappy bleepy synthpop.
