The Briish and Northern Irish failed to win any gold medals at the World Chapionships. Well done to those who won their Silvers and Bronze and those who represented their nation and tried their best. Is Athletics a fringe sport in the UK ?
The London Stadium was sold out when we held the World Champs here back in 2017, so there's still good support.
As for this year, looks like some untimely injuries have taken their toll on the Brits. Plenty of amazing action all around though - licking off with the marathon that began with a false start and ended with a photo finish!
The gold medal haul was disappointing indeed.
However only 5 countries ended with more medals in total, and in the rankings list, which awards points for placings in the final, 8 for finishing 1st down to 1 for finishing 8th, GB and NI came equal 4th, with only USA, Kenya and Jamaica finishing above us.
When you add into that the injuries a couple of our athletes sustained during the competition, as well as one or two not being at their best as they were returning from injury, we probably did almost as well as could be expected. The relays not getting a single medal was probably our biggest disappointment.
So while I agree Athletics is probably a minority sport in the UK, we do do pretty well in it.
