So with council cuts and savings the streets are full of litter in Barrow, there is a lot of graffiti.. the King is supposed to be visiting today to declare Barrow a Royal Port and honestly it looks like an absolute shit tip in town. Is littering a bad problem in your area too?

Wales is the second best recycling country in the world. Austria is top.

We have a very good recycle system.

However, a lot of people are just lazy and/or don't care.

To be fair with recycling and rejection rates it is because a lot of people don't know what is recyclable and not.

But.. a lot of people just chuck their cans and broken glass on the ground, it was nowhere near as bad a few years ago. Honestly walking through town is depressing when you're kicking your way through the litter. I will reiterate.. Kids walk our streets as well as cats and dogs.. I plead to the masses please stop throwing your rubbish on the ground.

Just returned from Jersey. No litter or even a cigarette end in sight. Spotless.

Exactly! There are plenty of bins around towns, it's not hard to look for one.

Maybe we should have some sort of adverts or program in schools like back in the 90s

Like a lot of places, there's something of a litter and graffiti problem in my area.

Some litter is due to bins blowing over and other accidents, but most is due to carelessness and thoughtlessness.

In some countries around the world - e.g. Bangladesh - it's considered perfectly normal to just chuck your rubbish on the ground. In Honduras they have a big problem with plastic waste coming from Guatemala via the Las Vacas River, partly caused by people just dumping their rubbish in it.

I just cannot understand the motivation to create graffiti. The vast bulk of it is ugly, meaningless scrawl that has the effect of degrading an area, causing fear, anxiety and a huge bill for the local council - if they have the resources to remove it.

My local council claims that it spends 83% of its budget on social care and homelessness, leaving very little for anything else, such as clearing up litter and graffiti.

Whilst some part of me doesn’t like this.. another part of me does. A large amount of manpower stuck in cells some doing stuff many not, combine with work parties comprising remand and just released prisoners , maybe add in some asylum applicants and we could have clean tidy cities and a workforce acquiring work skills etc.

A topic that grates my gears

There are regular litter picks nearby and routinely collect kilos of rubbish in small areas that's been thrown around the streets and even more from the play areas.

The local yobbos throw their cans, bottles, packets and anything else in people's drives or on the pavements as they patrol their "patch" almost like a dog pisses on gate posts to leave a mark

A family of smokers stand on their slabbed area at the front and throw their dog end on the street/pavement and you can see where they walk with all the detritus.

It's easy enough to use bins, just wish the ignorant bastards discovered how bins work

Odd how litter is perceived to be the council's fault and not the entitled mentality of those dropping it to begin with.

You are right. It shouldn't be a council problem. This is a people problem. Carelessness and laziness from younger generations. I saw graffiti "this is England" probably to do with the immigration problem but my first thought was "yeah it's an absolute shit hole isn't it." I know some want to get their message across but there are platforms to do so and defiling buildings with graffiti is not acceptable neither is throwing your litter on the ground because you CBA to put it in a bin. It's a self serving cycle of miserableness for them to walk their streets and see it in the state it is in

Local councils do have responsibility too. I live in a small coastal town. We used to have street cleaners , with brooms etc and daily litter collections. Now if we are lucky we get a street cleaning vehicle once a week that just seems to scoop rubbish in the front and blow it out the back. Bins are overflowing between collections, which causes a lot of the problems. Where there were tended gardens with seasonal blooms, we have beds of “ s” to help the biodiversity, the cracks between paving and gutters no longer get ed for the same spurious reasoning …
