I sat next to this woman in the canteen. Well, things were a bit whiffy, I can tell you. So I said, "What's that smell?" She says "It's 'Ma Griffe'." I said "Whatever it is, it wants a wash!"

Thankyou so much for entertaining us.As Hyacinth you were in total control of essence of that great series.

I did meet her very briefly once at hotel she used to retreat to.

She had to deal with a few people in the restaurant that day and was just so lovely and kind.

"Will Sheridan and his friend Tarquin be in her will "

I wish to express my sincere condolences to Sheridan Bucket on the sad passing of his mother.

In unrelated news his perennial housemate and celebrated local gayer Tarquin is throwing a coming out party this evening for his longtime life-love. Who will it be?

So sad if Sheridan is unable to attend owing to his bereavement but I am sure the lady of the house would not object in particular as Tarquin reportedly plans to serve dinner on the Villeroy & Boch and use the Christofle silverware.

Work/Play in London, live in Kent

Dame Patricia was a game old girl.

She was great in her telly roles but the role that I shall always treasure seeing her in was on the stage. It was the end of a tour and I say her at Chichester Festival Theatre as Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest.

There was a palpable excitement in the room as we approached that line. We all held her breath as she hovered over the vowels … “… a … haaaaaaand baaaaaahhhgggg?”

Even her scene partner could not keep it in. He corosed we corpsed the butler (who should not have been on stage of I remember the directions) wobbled his silver tray.

Dame P waited for the laughter to subside. She projected the fourth wall and in a Bennettian tone address is in the cheap seats. “That caused a reaction didn’t it. I suppose there may be a few at the back who did not hear”. With a devilish glint she looked toward her costar and said “take it from ‘Worthing is a place …’”. And with that she was back to her most imperious Aunt Augusta.

Little did I know that across the globe in a small city in Australia my many-year-later husband was reading reviews of the show. He pitched and idea and Patricia and most of the cast were touring the show across the continent. Including a few shows in the outback.

There was a longer run as part of a festival in my husband’s parents lived. Patricia liked wine. So does my mother in law. Patricia liked to be driven to the countryside during the day and my father in law was hired as driver. Old Dad-in-law ferried his charge and his wife through the country most non-matinee days and most non-matinee days seemed to end up at the cellar door of one of the many local wineries.

The wine was untouched as the evening performance was sacrosanct. But dinner for two in the dressing room afterwards always sank at least one of the days purchases.

The shopping charges for the collection were eye watering on her return.

MiL and she stayed in touch. Twenty odd years later despite not meeting physically again they maintained a friendship, they still had regular phone calls and exchanged Christmas presents. Most often a new world white.

She was a great actress, a lovely women and a dear friend to my parents in law.
