Complete gym novice here, like to keep fit with running and swimming, but would like to build some core strength. Anyone got any recommendations for a foundation of a routine?

Book a personal trainer.

He/she will talk about your goals and set out a routine specific to you

Yeah, as above, if you can, get a personal trainer but some ideas to get you started..

As long as you have no injuries or specific issues start with planks, either on your knees or fully supported, sit-ups, russian twists and mountain climbers.

Sit ups are crap, more likely to screw up your back than build a 6 pack

Are you a member of a gym yet ? That is the most important thing when planning a programme of fitness. Don't just join the first one you come across as this will be the place that you will be coming back to again and again. Staff is the first thing you need to look at, are they interested in you as a person, do they engage well, what are the PT like and can you see yourself working with them. Next the enviroment, is it clean, good atmosphere, do other members look happy , is it clean particurly in the changing rooms, does the gym have everything you need , is it in a good location then consider the price each month. Just because it is the cheapest or really doesn't mean anything. It matters what you get out of it. Good luck in attaining your goals.

"To start twice a week"

If only twice then I’d recommend doing two full body workouts, if you google 2x full body gym days a few should come up

100% this.

If you are going down the PT route or looking for some help, the staff element shouldn't be overlooked
