Time to stop smoking

Just been going through my finances to save cash, and I didn't realise I spent just over £6000+ a year on tobacco. Fuck that's a lot.

It's time I really need to stop smoking. I've got patches, I've got gum. I can do this.

Good luck.

If you need motivation, smoking is a filthy habit and puts people off with meetings.

So as well as saving money, you open up more options.

I aim to stop soon, but, well...

This is something I really struggled with.

I tried patches, lozenges, gum and nothing worked.

Then I got a vape and gradually reduced the strength of the liquids to wean myself off.

It took a few months but I finally broke free from nicotine.

I used to be really good at smoking. Like 40 a day in the week and 60 at the weekend good. Never thought I would be able to kick it but I did, using pyschological therapy (a specific word that appears to be banned from this forum) and patches. Im over 15 years free of it now and wouldnt risk even a casual drag because it could undo all that hard work

I gave up smoking 20 years ago. It was a lung infection that made me. I've now just been diagnosed with cold. The sooner you can give up the better ur health will be.

Put the money in a tin that you would have spent on cigarettes each day and see how much you've saved. After a couple of months you could use that money to treat yourself, it would be like getting it for free.

Just focus on the cruise holiday you’re going on next year after you’ve ditch the fags.

Go for whichever method of giving up suits you - I used to smoke 60 Malborough a day, totally addicted to nicotine....I set myself a date to give up, threw any remaining cigarettes away and stopped - I'm not going to lie, it was hell but only for around 2 weeks and I broke the addiction...best thing I ever did. Best of luck.

You stop when your desire not to smoke is just slightly stronger than your wanting to do it. The physical addiction is usually broken in a week or two. In my experience gum, vapes etc just prolong the misery. It's after the cravings subside that the mental traps await.

A trick that eventually worked for me, when the urge comes on you, was to go through the motions of smoking, roll paper into a tube, pretend to light it, inhale and exhale as if smoking, relax and have that Hamlet moment. By the time I'd done that the urgent need had subsided a bit. Admit to yourself that you still want to smoke, just not right now.

Now 25 years later I hardly ever think about it.

Talk to your doctor (GP), because he, or she, wants you to stop, as well !!!

I switched to vapes (the MTL type) about three and a half years ago. Went from 20 to 30 fags a day to Zero in a week. Haven’t had a fag since.

Heart attack 2 years ago, perforated ulcer start of June and emergency surgery! Trying! Company is great but I still have a boss of our department that stresses me! Doesn't help me with quitting. Got a meeting with him and hr as a follow-up to missing a call out from my medication makes me sleepy and I wouldn't be able to drive 60 miles safely after having it but I have to take it early evening to be safe to drive in the morning....he won't win as I have medical information already filled with work!!

I’ve never smoked. Is £6k a year typical? Genuine question. I’m gobsmacked it’s so high.

Think you’ll find that is half a Euro. Assuming 1 pack of 20 a day, that is an extra €182 per year.

I was wondering if any cigarette smokers had tried a pipe. My grandfather had a pipe and scared me (and caused nightmares) by insisting it had been made from a human arm bone.

You have to occupy your time, it's absolutly worth it!

I used to smoke 20 a day and know it's tough.. I tried vapes but it didn't work/

I quit out of pure spite when a family member was an asshole to me about it.. (they smoked themselves but lied about it).. so I quit that night and it was the best decision ever.

Try replacing it with something better, head out for a walk, listen to podcasts, drink coffee.. honestly so much is better and once you drop the smokes you can work on the things you replaces it with..

I definitely replaced it with food, I got quite overweight but now I've sorted that out too, you really can do it and you'll feel so much better for it, and people will want to be around you more when you're not going for a smoke every hour!

I did it yet again over 15 years ago. Not easy and I still have cravings

I was on 30 a day and decided something had to be done so I stopped.

The secret is not to tell anyone, there is always a fellow smoker willing to entice you back into the "gang"

It's doesn't look cool, you smell, your house smells and nobody wants to kiss you

You can do it, and if you weaken just stop again the next day. Good luck

My partner went to nicotine gums, still wants a crafty smoke if he can after about 30 years of smoking.

A friend had acupuncture, they then said next time you light up it'll taste disgusting. And it did.

He never smoked again.

If you think (like I did) giving up as a heavy smoker is too big a _ountain to climb -

Don’t give up - just don’t have the first cigarette of the day. Then you can’t have the second etc. use the N H S app, take up a new hobby where you use your hands and have to concentrate a bit ( airfix kits for example) when you get the urge for a cig go and do something else ( models worked for me).

Tell your partner- they will support you.

Good luck - stay strong- it can be done!

60 / day B&H still havnt had that first of the day, 13 years clean and counting.

I did it with patches.

Gave up February 2024.

You Dr surgery may offer a smoking cessation clinic, which is useful.

And you will find once you stop smoking that it really disgustingly stinks.

Was smoking 80-100 rollies every day, £300 a month. Now I vape, much cheaper and nicer. Although I still get a 30g pouch of tobacco every 2 weeks, at the end of those 2 weeks I crave it even though I really don't like smoking anymore.
