retiring abroad

I'm seriously considering a move overseas in the next few years so getting myself ready in advance with all the planning.

Looking for a country that is:

gay friendly obviously

economical stable - so cost of living is predictable

has good weather

straightforward visa programs

local and western amenities

good transport options

have any of you taken the plunge?

i have a timeline in mind and its within the next 8 years - seems a long time but it really isnt when you consider having to save, establish a digital nomad income so you are able to work from anywhere and tie up all loose ends for a clean break - talking credit cards and loans settled, either sell the house or keep it as a rental for income depending on where i am at that stage

lots to think about

The usual one cited that ticks those boxes is Portugal.

Gran Canaria may be worth a look. I think Spain has a specialist nomad visa programme.

Agree, would love to move there one day. Good infrastructure, nice people, but buying there can be a long process I believe.

I should probably consider the Spanish one. I have my husband's pension in payment (he was older) for the rest of my life and it's not insignificant. I doubt I could do it and get a work permit as retiring at 35 sounds boring though.

Live near benidorm. I visit brum now and then.

We moved to the Costa Blanca 12 years ago. Best decision we ever made. Low wage economy leads to a far lower cost of living. The other gains are obvious, weather, lots of outdoor sex, loads of married Spaniards are bi etc etc

Don’t sell your house, income from rental helps and if you decide to return you have a property and don’t need to buy at a higher price!

Good luck

Portugal WAS a good option when it had NHR at 0% tax.

Look at Thailand, it's LTR Visa program.

No tax and you only really need to be in country one day a year to retain a 10 year, repeatable, visa valid.

Malaysia is a decent option as is Vietnam.

Can't disagree enough.

Your Capital is tied up, you still get the maintenance costs, insurance, council tax.

Sure, you can rent out if you haven't a lovely place, want to take the chance, and still pay 20/40% of the rental income to UK State even when you don't live here

Sell up and buy or rent elsewhere is my advice (I was an IFA).

Malaysia is a Muslim country. Good luck taking the risk of being caned in public, or having your cock cut off on prison.

Brexit makes it much more difficult to get residency in the EU. We are a third listed country, our governments choice. We've had a house in France since 2006 and didn't apply for residency. Now it's very difficult. No regrets though. Basically 6 months of the year there suits me

Antarctica is the most beautiful place I've ever been on Earth. Hard to retire there though, sadly....

Retiring abroad sounds really appealing, but it's crucial to consider the potential healthcare implications. If health issues arise, returning to the UK for NHS treatment might be necessary, which can be challenging, especially in emergencies. For those with existing health concerns, this is an important factor to weigh up, not trying to be a spoilsport but offering a practical perspective.

The Netherlands of course. Just 45 mins from UK if you need back and perfect in any other way. Home from home for English and for Scots its usually Germany given the similarities in dialect and way of life.

You can no longer just up and go to any EU country you can only stay 90 days then leave for at least 90 days then return for 90 days and so on

I did it for over 5 years. Chance came to go back to the u.k, grabbed it with both hands. Don't sell your house, let a letting agency deal with things. If you cannot learn the language things are difficult. Brexit has blown most of your fantasies of a life in Europe to bits. Its a lot of stress setting up your new life. It gets easier. I may have been unlucky but the "ex pats" as they call themselves were just in bars , reading the sun, watching u.k TV and moaning about the council back home. The truth is, many stayed because they burned too many bridges to go home, sold house, spent like a millionaire, etc, etc. Think carefully, talk to other people living out there before you go, paperwork, language problems all add up.

Australia

Portugal is good. I know a few people from the UK that transferred their pension to Australia and live here now but i'm clueless as to the process or visa requirements.

A few of my retired friends "season hop". They spend European winter somewhere warmer the canaries or the upper half of Australia. And then move back to Europe for their summer. So having a property in both places can be advantageous. One of my friends rents his place out as an Airbnb so he can take it back wherever he wants. It does take time, effort and money to keep that going from abroad - like paying a cleaner to change and wash linen, general upkeep fees.

Speak to a financial adviser. You can find out a lot about options you may not be aware of
