Now it’s darker in the mornings and early evenings the amount of vans , not just white, I’ve seen that have just one brake light or only one headlight working. The police in my area had a recent crackdown and a high proportion had no MOTs or insurance. Is this nationwide?

Vans are worked hard in many ways, often very high mileage and are not always operated by transport professionals

Servicing and maintenance is not as it should be.

I know i shouldnt generalise but its true.

Why pick on vans, the amount of cars with a light off or just the day running lights on is a regular occurrence not to mention ( but I will) cyclist in dark clothing with no lights at all!

As A LGV driver I see it all 🫣

A lot of self employed builders and other mobile tradesmen have loose, heavy tools and other gear in the van that can cause damage inside to wiring and light fittings.

Bigger firms usually pay for proper storage equipment to be installed: take a look inside an AA/RAC van sometime.
