Wearing a ring on little finger

Years ago when in my late teens, whilst working for my parents who ran a shop, as I'd not long passed my driving test, I was given the job of doing home delivery's to customers.

One such delivery was to a customer who was the manager of a Halfords store and wanted the delivery to be made there after the store was closed.

I arrived and he let me in, anyway he was quite chatty and we ended up having fun in the store room.

He said he knew I was gay because I was wearing a ring on my little finger. I didn't know this was a 'signal' to anyone, I just liked the look.

Curious if anyone knew of any other subtle signs similar that we might not be aware of.

No, that's rubbish, wearing a ring on you're pinky finger is a class thing, all upper class men wear a signet ring on their left pinky, look at king Charles and all aristos.

It's not rubbish, it was adopted by gays and lesbians in the 1940's as a way of signalling their sexual preference when it was still illegal for men and frowned on with women

But as with most things, these days the meaning has changed again as people don't need to be so discrete, but the time when the OP was referring to it would have still been prevalent

There are loads of references to it

Here's one

'Gays and lesbians started wearing pinky rings in the 1940s. This trend became incredibly popular between 1950 and 1970. The pinky rings weren't just a fashion statement. In fact, they were a symbol of sexual preference'

Correct, it should have a black stone in it as far as I recall. There was also Polari (a gay language) to disguise the conversation between gay men (you can hear it in “Round the Horne”). In those days you could be arrested and imprisoned for gay sex, so this was a way of disguising what was being said from others who may over hear. This is where the “a friend of Dorothy” came from as in “oh, he’s a friend of Dorothy” which meant that the person was gay.

Yep, a ring on your little finger in the 80s certainly was a discreet sign to others that you were gay. Not sure if it still is, or if its been hijacked for another meaning these days. Also, having the left ear lobe pierced rather than the right was deemed to be a sign of gayness.

My father always wore a signet ring on his little finger. He was given it on his 18th birthday. But as he grew and in the RAF he was a member of the combined forces boxing team he had to move the ring so that he could continue to wear it.

Nothing about being gay etc

Yep right ear down my way as well.

Think the signet ring has gone out of style now, but certainly was still around in the 80’s. You have to remember that gay sex was only decriminalised in 1967, before that if caught you could end up in prison for it, so there would have been more people around who had lived through having to hide there true nature. Even after decriminalisation there was still stigma and discrimination, this started to fall away from the 80’s. In today’s society where it is much more open (there are still some who are prejudiced) it is hard for some people to understand what life was like.

Well originally signet rings would have a design and were used to create an impression in melted wax as a seal, so they were around for a very long time. But they were adopted as a sign of being gay at some point, usually with a black stone in the ring. This allowed those “in the know” to distinguish between ordinary and gay wearers.

I find it astonishing that people seem to be in such denial.

It's well known that this used to happen back in the 40's up to probably around the late 80's.

Just because there were other uses, as well as it having died out by now doesn't preclude that it did happen

Wouldn't call it denial. More of a case of not knowing. Even though I was first sexual active in the '70s and '80s when gay sex was legal but still taboo, I never knew all the signs. Heard about the earring ones but never the little finger one. When someone told me--probably in the late '90s--I thought it was a wind up.

Canadian engineers wear an iron ring on the little finger of their working hand. (Well, stainless steel now. The iron ones used corrode and turn people's finger green.)

Might make for an awkward conversation if one were to assume it were a gay ring for gays.

I think we can safely conclude - from the mixture of confusion, denial, argument, diffidence and uncertainty in this thread - that the wearing of a ring by a man on his little finger signifies absolutely zero in this day and age.

I recently came across a heavy-set lady who wears moccasins and plays golf almost every day and who, I learned to my incredulity, had zero Sapphic tendencies. I felt I should write to someone to complain about her selfish rejection of everything I’d been told but it was unclear to whom I should write.

You could still just be being ‘ironic’. You could suddenly shout “no homo!” and confuse us all.

Or you could just be an “ally”. You know, the type of man who will take a cock just to prove his ‘gay-adjacency’ but still wouldn’t felch as that’s too queer.

I worked in a bank in the early eighties in central London. The scene was clandestine. You could lose your job or promotion prospects or worse if people found out you were gay. Certainly some toffs wore pinkies usually worn gold ones but some gay guys wore a pinkie too, maybe a patterned one, left hand little finger bitch right hand butch. It was a subtle indicator that the straights were unaware of and I had a few lunchtime meets and even a job offer by wearing my ring. They dont know theyre born these days! Wow! I’d not heard about this before. Right ear pierced and coloured hankies Yes, but not about a pinky ring.

I’ve been wearing one since I got engaged in ‘91, so I guess I just missed out on it’s peak in the 70’s & 80’s. Dammit !

I’ve worn it ever since, it’s gold with diamonds, on my right hand, so could easily be considered a sign of being gay and a lover of cock.

We should revive this, make it relevant again, I’d Love a stranger to start a conversation with me by saying, “I like your ring !”

"It's that another urban myth like planting Pampas grass in the front garden advertises that it is the home of a swinging couple?"

I’m in my sixth decade and have never previously heard this nugget of wisdom! NOW I know why I've never felt comfortable around my brother-in-law. Who knew (I certainly didn't) that visiting this forum would become a voyage of self-discovery?

I wear my dads wedding ring on my little finger as he had very small hands compared to me and it was the only finger I could get it on

Can I ask the relevance if it is planted in the back garden?

Same here - one of my late wife's rings. I also have a Pampas grass in the front garden...

"No, that's rubbish, wearing a ring on you're pinky finger is a class thing, all upper class men wear a signet ring on their left pinky, look at king Charles and all aristos."

So all went to boarding schools. Are you saying the upper classes are never gay.

The ring on your little finger is not the ring I'm interested in
