Looking at Sharm or Hurgadah

Thanks in advance

If it was me, I wouldn’t have anything controversial on my phone in places where LGBT stuff is not welcomed.

Same. Next time I visit the States even I'll be purging my phone of anything political. Why put yourself in the firing line if you're just trying to have a nice holiday?

"I have no intention of going to the States while they are running the country "

From the official Government advice on Egypt:-

“Sexual assault and harassment

A number of sexual assaults have been reported to the British Embassy, including cases involving minors.

The majority of cases that have been reported took place in tourist resorts in the Red Sea region, often committed by someone the victim had already met, including hotel workers and excursion staff. There have also been reports of hotel staff discouraging incidents being reported to local police.

Female travellers should exercise caution when travelling alone, particularly at night, in taxis.”

“Laws and cultural differences

Egypt is predominantly an Islamic country. Take care to respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions.”

“Photography and filming restrictions

It is illegal to take or share photos that could be considered damaging to the country’s image…

…Ministry of Tourism regulations on photography say that you must get an Egyptian citizen’s written permission before you take their photo.”

“LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual activity is not explicitly criminalised in Egypt. However, the Egyptian authorities have prosecuted LGBT+ people under ‘debauchery’ laws, including people flying rainbow flags at public events.

There is little public acceptance of same-sex relationships in Egypt. Same-sex couples showing affection in public are likely to receive negative attention.

Be cautious about sharing content or having discussions of a sexual nature on social media, especially about sexual acts that are considered illegal. Some travellers have been arrested and imprisoned for this.

You may be denied entry if your gender expression or physical appearance does not match the sex marker in your passport or your passport photograph.”

——-

But you’re genuinely considering using gay sex apps on your phone on holiday in Egypt…

In the meantime, you won’t go anywhere the USA because: nasty orange man.

Trump Derangement Syndrome seems to be a very real thing.

I know someone that went on holiday and was persuaded to attend a party

Turned out to be a scam hosts wanted money otherwise threatened to go to police

Police are corrupt

Managed to leave but chased up road had no idea where he was

Thankfully police saw him running and picked him up

They accused him of all sorts

Eventually release but frightened life out of him

So be warned

As for USA no comparison

When I travel to the Middle East or Far East I take my second, clean phone. No dodgy apps, no dodgy photos or discussions,no cartoons that are hilarious here but blasphemous there, nothing to upset a nosey plod in a Muslim country. Can't be too careful.

Think you should read this from the BBC https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-64390817 Seems the police have been found using these sort of apps for entrapment.

Also worth checking out the travel advice on .gov.uk

Displays of public affection (even amongst straights) should be avoided as they are culturally no no’s (holding hands, kissing etc.) doing so can attract the attention of the police.

Are you actually recommending to the OP that he should be using gay apps on his phone on his holiday in Egypt and that there is no potential danger therein? That was the point of the thread.

Are you stating that the advice on the Government website on LGBT+ travelling, photography and cultural differences is false and should be totally ignored?

Is your conclusion that because you and your partner had a nice holiday in Egypt none of these issues exist?

I go to Egypt a lot, every couple of months. The yellow app beginning with G is widely used. I would advise extreme caution in meeting locals, or even getting into chats with them on the app. Lovely people in general, but you can never be sure who you are actually talking to. Plenty of ex-pats in Egypt.

Fascinating place and history but a complete shit hole though.

Love the museums and artifacts but would want nothing to do with the corrupt and aggressive people there.

The holiday resorts are just weird fake places and when you see the rest of the country it's a mess.

I'm not sure about now but Tunisia used to be very popular destination for European gay men, in Sousse young Tunisian men used to hang out along the promenade in the evening looking for punters, I had a holiday relationship with a guy that was staying at the same hotel as me and literally no-one batted an eyelid.

I've just come back from a two weeks trip to Egypt with my husband we visited Cairo, Giza, Aswan and Luxor. All my dating apps worked just fine with a VPN although majority of locals who contact you are "money boys"

The distance feature is automatically turned off when you use "gay" apps and everyone sends expiring photos and Vids. Also you can't screenshot profiles or messages either.

Our tour guide in Giza realised we were a couple from our matching wedding rings and even took some "romantic" photos of us with the pyramids and sphinx behind us which was really nice and afterwards took us to a shop that made cartouches and we got our names imprinted on then in hieroglyphs.

No idea of the risks in many of those type of countries but have travelled southern Africa a fair bit. Other than South Africa, most had gay sex available if you are looking for hung black men. South Africa was very against Gay/Bi sex but in the 70's and 80's, that changed massively and I believe is still going strong.

This is what I do when I travel less welcoming places. Never meet locals without having been introduced via someone else you trust. Plenty other travellers, expats and can verify via social media etc. Disable your distance on apps. Your own safety is your top priority, and discretion is key. Always meet in a public place for a coffee etc first. If they are hesitant, move on, dont even think twice.

It's a shame have to be like this, but your own safety should always trump a hookup.

I've been a regular visitor to Egypt for nearly 15 years, often twice a year. I've visited Sharm a few times but Hurghada more. Value for money it's fantastic and the weather is pretty much guaranteed. Most of the hotels are enormous with their own beach, multiple pools and several restaurants. Staff go out of their way to help you.

When it comes to hooking up with guys I've had a fair amount of success, but won't meet up with locals because I'm not naive, and wouldn't trust them.

Fabguys works well though, I've used it over there to meet other British guys. I also recommend Romeo which is perfectly functional in 'free' mode. Romeo is German but is also used by guys from other European men. I've had success with German and Polish holidaymakers from the same hotel as me.

It’s an Islamic state, and therefore women are treated very poorly, to put it mildly.

I was on a scuba diving course and after three days I mentioned to the guy who was running things that I hadn’t seen a local woman anywhere.

He responded by saying that he’d been there for 18 months and hadn’t seen one, as they were not allowed out !

Let alone work anywhere.

I’ll never go back, it opened my eyes to the awfulness and evil of Islam.

I've seen a few Egyptian women working at hotels and in shopping malls, even as taxi drivers there's nothing to stop them.

What you describe has nothing to do with religion either, it's more about the Egyptian custom. In Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia, Malaysia etc, all Muslim countries, you'll also find plenty of women with normal jobs.

What does it have to do with religion? Egypt is an extremely conservative society with certain customs, however around 10% of the population is Christian, and behave pretty much the same. The countries I mentioned earlier have less restrictions.

In the good old USA, and other parts of the world, some Christian groups have way more bigotted regimes that keep women under the thumb.

Can you name an Islamic state that you’d be happy for you and your female friends / relatives to live in ? And why ? "

What do you mean by 'Islamic State'?

Looking at Sharm or Hurgadah

Get a VPN if you're using them

Absolute nonsense!! Great country to visit if you stick to tourist areas. If you want a dreadful Islamic country to visit where NO city is safe..try the UK..

From Personal experience and I’ve been to Egypt twice

Yes, all the app works

If you are a foreigner, then you have no problem with the police that would not cause the only problem

As the meeting guys ideally I’ll meet other tours guys as the safest option

For meeting locals, don’t meet on the first date

Meet them for coffee at the earlier and see if they look reasonable and you feel comfortable and then invite them to your place

One thing I didn’t like about Egypt, most guys hardly any bottom

When I went I kinda made some friends online beforehand. They're often on apps using VPNs.

With one in particular we swapped numbers beforehand so it was just a regular whatsapp convo.

Had some fab sessions with him too.
