Does anyone find the cost of dogs shocking?

And I don’t especially mean puppies as such.

Didn’t have any issues with the rehoming charity centres (or what they were called back in the 90s). Nobody would actually come and check your house. Paid the fee once chosen a dog, and off you go.

Got a greyhound once (who was limping- broken leg?), RSPCA vets repaired it, and the dog was golden - could easily outrun me.

Reason for this post, our little dog has passed away last summer (and I had to bury him eventually: on my own). House feels so empty, despite having his photos and fridge magnets everywhere. Sometimes you think to yourself, could have done more. Potentially. But the decline was very rabid. Literally passed away on my arms, out in the park.

So, yes it’s still painful

I understand your pain, it's been a year and still miss her terribly. Lucky we still have one left.

The costs from rescues are a bit mental but I can understand it with the rise in costs to keep them in a safe place. The home visits by the nazi gatekeeping vegans pisses me off more than anything. "Oh you work? Can you come home every 2 hours to walk the dog? Do you have 400 acres of safe, enclosed space for the little 10 yr old chihuahua you're looking at? What about feeding? Have you thought about how you'll prepare a fresh, 5 course dinner every morning evening and night for teddy the shitzu?"

Anyone else remember when a friend or neighbours dog had puppies and you'd take one either free or for a nominal cost?

Trouble is now that same puppy would be sold as a labrajackadoodledanewah for a £1000+

Whenever I've had a dog it's always been a rescue and never had a home visit from the people at the rescue centre just the usual questions before signing the paperwork

Only £1000? I've seen people selling dogs for 5 figures. Admittedly they've all been nikes best customer, had three kids called hayden, kayden and okayden and drove a white rangerover evoque with added burberry but genuinely have seen them advertising dogs for 10k plus

Yeah, prices accelerated around then but people have lost their minds. As blunt and mean as it may sound, it's just a dog. You can't resell it, it's not an asset and it'll only ever cost you money. Just can't stand the greed around them.

All pets and livestock are really expensive now. Our insurance for the horses and cattle are painful, and vets can command huge fees.

It’s particularly sad to see dogs sold as second hand property…. “It’s grown too big… we’re expecting a baby… we’re moving house…. My partner has left me…..”.

Dogs are living and loving members of your pack and they depend on you. They shouldn’t be sold on at a profit or inflated price like a used push chair the child has grown out of. If you really need to set company with your best friend you should look for a kind home that is good enough to accept them without charge.

the rescue centres I've dealt with for cats and dogs make it hard to get the animals which I suppose is good in many ways but with the Dog's Trust and the Cat Protection I gave up after months and months of jumping through hoops with both charities because it was obvious I was never going to be given a cat or dog which I would have provided a loving home to. Bit crazy.

We take our dogs to France. They have French passports. One needed her teeth cleaned and descaled. They were brown and black. We got appointment easily. Anaesthetic, teeth cleaned really well and 7 days of antibiotics. €82.50 (£71.74 ish). There is poster on the wall of our UK vets. The price of teeth treatment with or without extraction. Similar treatment for our dog here is £350. Outrageous price. Any non emergency treatment can wait until we go to France again. The price difference can pay the ferry. Get a holiday for free against the UK price

Well said! Some seem to not do any research before acquiring a dog (or cat) then when it doesn't work out how they imagined, they offer it for sale like it's a commodity/second-hand sofa etc. almost as if the money is more important than finding a loving home for it.

Lost both of ours about 15 years ago aged 17 and a Half and Nearly 16 years old respectively - had both from about 3.5 months old. Broke my heart having to make those last trips to the vets, but it was best for them. Both passed in my arms.

Not just pure breeds but the amount of crossbreeds (mongrels in my days) fetching stupid money. Came across a woman walking a MalinoisxAkita this morning. Greed. Many years ago bought a GSD dog for £50 from a rescue centre no home visit, lovely house dog. What gets my goat is the amount of dogs brought into this country from europe by do gooders. Have a friend who was even waiting for a cat to come from Egypt.

Not to mention Insurance costs and vets bills…

Our large elderly dog premium.. over 1000 a year plus wanting a 200 quid excess so you pay for nearly all vets visits anyway and if it’s over 200 then you have to pay an additional 20% of the bill…!!!

I really can’t see many people being able to afford to have a dog soon..

Dogs are expensive no doubt about it. Vets in the UK are a shocking money making scheme. Designer dogs are for wankers worried about image and what thier friends will say, not given homes for the love of man's best friend. Dogs, given homes for the right reason, are companions. Rehoming centres can be pricey - ive taken a few myself - but thier overheads are staggering so it's not surprising. I now give homes to retired working dogs, and some retire as young as 2 if not suited to the work. Didn't pay more than £200 each for my current 2 loveable sofa hoggers. Proper thoroughbred head turner dogs that get more comments than your common 1 grand cavapoo or bishondachsund mongrel. Nearly all working dog breeds have rehoming societies, usually on Facebook.

Read recently that the cost of vet treatment has increased massively in line with the number of people taking out pet insurance/plans. Is it a case of vets charging what they want because they know insurers will just pay out and pass the costs onto next years premiums.

As I understand it, these large vet chains are buying up loads of private vet practices and monopolising the market. They then raise prices due to the lack of competition.

My last dog had a heart attack and died 4 months ago, it was a horrible experience and totally unexpected as she was only 4yrs old.

12 days ago I adopted a lovely 18 month old Jack Russell from the Dogs Trust. As he had only just come into the rehoming centre they have arranged to have him neutered in early December at their expense. The surgery won’t be cheap as he has an undescended testicle. The adoption fee was £265, which seems very good value considering the cost of surgery and his 2 vaccinations.

I would never buy a puppy as there are so many lovely dogs in need of a home through no fault of their own.

You're correct. Local vet near me with two branches, was bought over by a huge company. Which company? Mars would you believe!! If you need urgent vet treatment out of hours you're looking at £700, yes £700 before any treatment!!

I changed to a nearby country vet who still work with Horses, cattle, sheep as well as domestic animals. Reasonable prices and obvious caring vets and staff.

Yes, there has been a lot about that in the media recently- even claims that some are being pressured into suggesting expensive diagnostic tests as “a precaution”. 😠

I Have four rescues, the cost of the charity paying for travel, pet passports etc is expensive. It’s for dogs welfare that the home checks are done , its not a big deal , we are looking at security of the garden and getting a feel for its new home .

It’s like anything though. If you can’t afford one, don’t have one.

You know before you get it that it will cost a lot of money, so why complain when it does?

I agree, having had dogs for over fifty years, but peoples love and need to keep dogs is being unscrupulously being taken advantage of by US style pet health care insurance companies and multi-hub style vets raking in the money from 'designer dog' owners with more money than sense! When my last dog passed some ten years ago... I could see how things were going in the UK and resisted the urge to get another! Again, the UK governments missing at the wheel to sort these money grabbing bar stewards out!

Yesterday I met someone who had paid £250 to a druggie family for a mongrel, which had up to then had had no proper treatment or veterinary input. Fleas, mites, you name it. It's fine now, beautiful dog, and its owner can't do enough (of the right things, not pampering) for it. I think the owner would say it was worth the expense. I know the dog would!

"It's not so much the dog but the robbing vets."

When I lived in Hampshire some years ago, the lady I lived with was loaded, and she had two Labradors.

Her Vets bills were ludicrous, and I always questioned this with her, although it was never part of my expense.

Anyway, her Vet had a helicopter as his fun way of getting around for holidays and social times.

I gave up asking/questioning her about the ludicrous cost of an injection etc, people will pay whatever’s necessary, and Vets will become very rich.
