Worst car you've ever driven, and why

For me it's split between two, both 4x4s (not owned by me I hasten to add, just company vehicles I had the occasional use of)

Jeep Cherokee 4L straight six. The most horrible cheap plastic interior and worst seats ever, absolutely no support where needed.

Vauxhall Frontera 3.2 V6. Better inside than the Jeep but with the absolute worst auto box I've ever experienced, that would kick down entirely unpredictably and send anything in the back crashing into the tailgate while it lunged at the horizon on big wobbly tyres and vague steering.

My own, was an Allegro. Awful gear box just felt ancient. Sold it within a month.

My friend’s Skoda Karoq. Dreadful automatic gearbox. 2-3 second delay from standstill. Scary as hell at roundabouts. I now refuse to drive it. I call it the death trap.

Peugeot 308 130bhp 1.2 PureTech (or should I say PureCrap) engine. Loved the car but the 'wet timing belt' gave me so much grief. Swathes of cars now have them including Ford, Vauxhall, Citreon. Maybe I just got a bad apple- but never again.

I’ll second the Frontera. Was a Vauxhall salesman when they were new. Awful things, hated driving them. Likewise Corsa B. Everyone raved about them, I didn’t rate them at all

Bought a Citroen C4. On the whole a nice car but got rid because of two major faults: Despite being quite roomy inside getting in and out was awkward because of bad door design and I'm not that tall. Also all the controls on a central screen. You had to take your eyes off the road to operate it. Not good on a busy motorway during intermittent rain

Was a "hire car" from a breakdown company to get me home. Would rather have stayed on the side of the road in the rain. Horrendous car.

Most boring

Bentley Silver Spur. Delivered no driver enjoyment, everyone thought I was a dick driving it. Took me forever to pull out of junctions.

My second car was a Ford £scort Mk2 1100cc Popular, three door, light blue, bought it in February 1989 for £3095, it was a 1985 C reg, it was underpowered, slow and I couldn't get a comfortable driving position in it.

It was also very unreliable, if it rained thd night before it wouldn't start, it also started rusting badly as soon as I got it, despite me regularly waxing it.

I had it 14 Months traded it in for just £1,000, for a Mk2 Vauxhall Astra 1300cc Merit, 3 Door, it was £4695, it was a far better car and I had it for six years. The £scort put me off Fords for life.

Although I've already mentioned my dislike of 4x4s, I had to deliver a Land Rover Defender (short wheelbase) across the country for my boss once. I know the graunchy box and vague backlashy steering are kind of necessities for offroading, but god was it a trial to drive on the motorway at any kind of keeping-up speed. Keeping it pointing straight ahead was a matter of absolute concentration, I felt like I had to be actively steering it at all times and was very relieved to return in the Freelander he'd swapped it for. At least that had a pretence at road manners.

Similar experience with a very early Suzuki mini 4x4, forget whether it was a Jimny or Vitara, but an absolutely gutless thing, needed to be revved till it screamed to make any kind of progress, even vaguer steering with about a quarter turn of do-nothing backlash that felt actively dangerous.

Worm and peg steering box thats why the steering was vague. You can have a couple of inches play at the steering wheel. Thats why you see old films with the driver sawing away at the wheel.
