Anyone else getting side effects from PREP?

Have taken event Prep for the first time this week, taking the 4th tablet later today.

It’s making me feel a little unstable on my feet, light headed and a bit sicky, although not been sick.

When I first started taking PrEP I had an upset stomach for 24 hours, and also very vivid dreams for a week or so.

The greatest side effect for me was feeling ‘empowered’ - I can now explore my full sexual side

I've been taking event based prep whenever I need it for the last 12 months. Zero side effects from day one.

I take event based PreP, occasionally feel a slight tummy sensation, really mild and short lived when it has happened, didn't bother me really

So if I only had sex with guys on PrEP as a strict rule does that mean I don’t have to take it to stay safe from HIV?

"So if I only had sex with guys on PrEP as a strict rule does that mean I don’t have to take it to stay safe from HIV? "

You need to educate yourself. PrEP does reduce the risks of HIV transmission but that relies on everyone telling the truth. Do you trust the guy enough to rely on it? I wouldn't! PrEP doesn't stop other STIs, so you need regular check-ups

First time last weekend - similar symptoms plus bad reflux the first night.

I was at the S.H. clinic for jabs on Tuesday, nurse said it’s very common and shouldn’t last. She suggested continuing with one pill a day for a while, though I didn’t fancy that.

"So if I only had sex with guys on PrEP as a strict rule does that mean I don’t have to take it to stay safe from HIV? "

The only person responsible for your safety (sexually, health or otherwise) is YOU.

You take it to help protect yourself against catching HIV, it will not protect you from other STI’s.

You can’t rely on what others tell you regarding their sexual health status - some people may well lie about it.

What other measures you take against catching STI’s are up to you, the risk is yours, But your local sexual health clinic can help and give professional advice - but be honest with them.

I’m glad it’s not just me then.

Thursday next week I’m back at the clinic, I’ll certainly mention it.

I’d describe it more of a motion sickness it’s the unsteadiness on my feet that’s concerning.

However, it has improved as the day has progressed.

Thanks to all for commenting.

Obviously if it still making you feel like that in a few more days, go back to the clinic and tell them.

Whilst I have been on daily prep now for 8 years and not had a problem, I know one person who cannot have Prep as he is allergic to the pills coating.

I found taking 2 tablets event based initially was giving me nausea and stomach ache. I decide to take one tablet the day before, then the two on the event day, and then one and one to complete. Had no problems with this method as it seems to allow my body to adjust.

No problems here on event based prep

following the guidelines. It's nice to feel I'm being responsible to those I meet and my wife.

Your own ignorance is what's going to lean you to go forwards and catch stds. Concern yourself with that over worrying about what others do to protect themselves. Maybe celibacy will put your mind at rest.

its liberating. takes a few days for the body to settle but the confidence with guys is immeasurable. Even if you use condoms knowing your protected makes the sex more free as you're not constantly checking condoms are still on or split.

as for the ‘oral only’ guy above with the stupid std comment.. grow up or stop cheating on your wife!! You can catch (and treat) plenty from oral, we all have the freedom to enjoy sex however we choose without stupid comments!

Most important/dangerous side effect is the hidden one...impact on kidney function. Its important to get that checked at clinic particularly if taking prep on daily basis. I had to shift to event based only for this reason and has reduced adverse impact on kidneys substantially.

Was on PrEP daily for a good few months (around 6) but then started having side effects with bowel movements and a blood test showed it to be affecting my kidneys, so was advised to go on-demand instead. Trouble is it's becoming too much of a pain to plan meets in advance as I don't often know when I'm free. I just loved spontaneous hooking ups and getting fucked when I was on daily - crap weather and GF doesn't help!

It can be rough the first week but the side effects do fully go!

I gave up the first time and went back to the clinic but luckily I see the same clinician every time and he persuaded me and promised it will pass and it did

Ask about Descovy (emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide or F/TAF), or injectable

Cabotegravir both have fewer kidney effects

Thank you for this, it's pretty much what I said at my meeting to get put on PReP, I'm aiming to only receive with a condom, but this way if the condom fails I won't have to spend the next few months having a nervous breakdown.
