I really do love my 17 year old Micra. Cost peanuts to buy for cash (no HP crippling me), economical to run and service and surprisingly fun to drive when I give it the Italian tuneup treatment.

It's modern enough to have PAS and ABS but old enough not to be swamped in pointless electronics.

Also I don't know if they were standard or aftermarket but mine has really cute drilled aluminium pedals that seem far too racy to be on a shopping cart. Fabulous five speed box too, way better than any Ford or Vauxhall gearchange.

Isn't it always your first car? The freedom it brings. I had a 1987 breadvan VW Polo. 4 gears, 0-60 occasionally and no radio, but I thought it was magnificent.

First I owned was a Datsun Stanza (pre-Nissan!) It wasn't a great car and quite primitive but you're right about the freedom.
