They’re almost here!

I like a nice Xmas market but many are just a group of sheds selling the same shite

I do like to go on an overnight stay with the Mrs and even better with other people

Look around the shops in the day have a drink or two

Back to hotel get dressed all nice n cosy warm, then hit the market at night for the lively atmosphere, lights, smells and big hotdogs

Intermingled with beers

How do you feel?

I went to the Brum one a couple of times but it's very samey every year, only the extortionate prices change.

There's only so much lager, glühwein, sausages in rolls without even any butter and gingerbread houses my salary can stand, and it's always crowded as fuck with people convincing themselves they're having a good time, so it's a Bah! Humbug! from me.

Now if there were any ye olde Dickensian hot chestnut and spiced ale/mulled wine sellers, I could be tempted, but the "German" (they're all actually East European vendors) stuff just gets on my tits these days.

I've not been to one here. Friends live in Goslar in Germany. We go there quite often. The Christmas market in the square is in a star shape. With stalls selling alsorts of Christmas food and drink mostly. They take up some of the cobbles and put full grown pine trees in, so there is a mini pine forest in the centre. Bark chips underfoot a little tables round the trunks. Piped bird song and white fairy lights make it so Christmassy. The first time I saw it it was so good it made me laugh. Rammelsburg silver mine has a market in the disused mine and mine building. Walking down a tunnel rounding a corner to see a woman dressed as an angel playing the violin. Just amazing

They're just kind of samey and predictable, I'd rather just spend my money in the local pub for some drinks and food and have "Now that's what I call Christmas" playing in the background

Set a Budget

Go normal shopping, if you see something you know someone would like, use and appreciate.

Buy it.

If not, put some cash in an Envelope.

Some People like Markets, Some Don’t. Personally I prefer to shop in warm places.

The Nordic countries do them very well, as does Poland, Germany and Belgium, I've not tried any others. They are all much better than the dumbed-down crap we get in the UK.

I've not been to any overseas, but would love to visit one in Germany or Austria sometime.

I agree with the above, the ones here tend to be samey and so expensive.

To be fair even a lot of the European ones now are going similar way, same stalls on repeat, same tat.

Look out for the more popup style ones, we have a few in leeds that are makers markets with genuine local style craftspeople that are one weekend only type. Saltaire has a really good one though just passed a few weeks ago.

I steer clear of the big ones now, but some good alternatives if you dig bit deeper.

You need to go to Germany to experience the true Christmas markets, I lived in the Hannover area for 8 years, unbelievable market there, went back for Christmas and Newyear last year had a brilliant time again, hopefully go again next year x

I was at one today - happily it was in an outdoor museum so I spent very little time looking at the Christmas stuff.

I have zero interest in Christmas Markets, or shopping in general.

I don't buy tat, I just buy what I need in life. Apart from foodstuffs, pretty much everything else I purchase is off the internet.

Guilty, but when it's such an obvious low-effort cynical cash grab as the Birmingham one, it's hard not to humbug at it. I mean come on, how much effort is it to put butter in your fucking hot dog rolls? I'm not fucking paying a fiver for a sausage in a bit of dry bread.

The UK ones are pale imitations of genuine Christmas markets I go to Berlin every year and experience the genuine article, with prices a fraction of the UK ones.

I read the beer at the markets abroad is around £2.50. Here in the Cardiff Xmas market it's around £7-8.

There's always the check you have to do for car stopping bollards either end.

And it’s a pain in the ass trying to get anywhere in the city whilst it occupies the main pedestrian street, detours to get to Symphony Hall for example.

What about the ones in Scotland, if they do them? In so many respects Scotland feels much more 'European' than other parts of Great Britain. I wonder if any Scottish fabbers could ✨️🌟illuminate ✨️🌟 me (see what I did there? ) 🎄🌟❄️☃️⛄️

I like them, puts me in the christmas holidays spirit. The one near my house has lots of different stalls. Frankfurter kiosks. Nutella crepes, Yorkie wraps, I love it! Sometimes the price of Christmas gifts puts me off, feel they're taking the Mick a bit? But the food and the mulled wine? I'm all for it.. ☺️☺️

I agree, although I'm sure the council charges them a pretty penny for a pitch.

We went to Vienna last year & it was wonderful.

The city is stunning, & the markets are genuinely lovely. Each market is themed around a style or type of shopping, so the market at the Rathausplatz is all Xmas decorations etc.

It's really worth going.
