Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is an operation to reduce the size of the prostate gland. It's done if the prostate has grown too large and is causing problems when peeing xx

…or prostate cancer.

There’s a lot of information on the MacMillan cancer site if you look.

There are many variations on the type of TURP op done. I found out very quickly that a second opinion is always a good Idea. I was offered a type of TURP op by my local NHS hospital simply because it was the one they did. They did not mention whether it was the best type for me. A second consult at another hospital explained why two other types would be better, given the size of my prostate. Anothe consult at a private hospital agreed, and I was reminded the NHS has to allow anyone to specify the consultant, and therefore hospital they want, anywhere in the UK. I had the op better suited to me, at another hosputal, not my local one. I am happy with the results.

Get a second opinion.

Good luck!

My late father had a prostate op when he retired due to an enlarged prostate. The surgeon who performed the op “butchered” him (along with a number of others). This lead to long term problems, for a number of years he had to “self catheterise”, also issues with bladder control and leading to having to use pads, which then caused sores.

So if you need to have such an op, make sure you talk it through thoroughly and understand the risks if something goes wrong.

A sensible reply. There are several 'TURP" style treatments, look at what is available. I would certainly recommend Rezum, a much more non-invasive and effective treatment
