not a sexy question but often get asked to donate to raffles, charities, major birthdays, retirements of people I've not really had much to do with etc. Finding it difficult to give money away, not earning loads of money and struggling with the cost of living but feel guilty saying no, any tips..?

Just ignore the charities, walk straight pass them and avoid eye contact.

For people at work, just say “sorry I can’t this Month” Don’t feel pushed to give.

I really don't have a problem saying no to things I don't want to do. Additionally, I never apologise or feel I need to give a reason for saying no to something, and don't respond to open questions.

I get the pressure. My employer is currently supporting the Wales Air Ambulance and lots going on, with an upcoming quiz night.

I just say no. I do a few hours at the local food bank on a Sat morning just bagging up groceries.

I'm happy with that.

Wife had a shop

Year on year local people came in for charity collections or gift donations

None of them ever came to the shop to buy anything

Economy killed the business but they still came in as we struggled to keep going

Wife always donated , whilst I always thought to tell em to clear off as they never supported our business!

That’s how I feel now.

Same with the homeless guys on high street that actually live locally and claim full benefits

No donations if they don’t have a collection tin. They are not getting my bank details, phone number or email - The number of “charities” that got done by the ICO for misuse of personal data a few years back was quite shocking. Some were even financially profiling donors to work out who to target for larger donations. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-39502258.amp

Charities should be voluntary because you believe in the cause, not because you've felt harrassed into it. I give to the charities I've chosen.

As for work things, I find that a bit trickier. But I also notice our work is quite selective about who they collect for, which isn't right either

This time of year seems to be the worse with chuggers in the foyers of every big store. I tend to look straight ahead and ignore them but feel guilty doing so.

Also these days with buying almost everything with card I rarely have much cash on me.

I where I work an email will go around saying there is a card in reception and if you want to give some money there is an envelope there too.

No pressure if you want to you’ll go find it.

Chuggers I avoid as they don’t have any links to the charity it’s just commission sales. I give to the hospice / MacMillan who supported me and my husband through his cancer.

I don’t do work Christmas parties. Can’t stand d*unk heterosexual women who don’t go out much.

They were an asset to the local village and thought it worthy of a contribution.

Then the owner found out and I was reprimanded, even though he supported a few charities openly!!

I give freely to charity often enough so I do not like being pestered or pressured to give by others at all.

I am not a big fan of huge charities and their multi million pound costly organisations so most of my giving is to smaller personal ones where I know where the money is going.

I just say no thanks on the street and it doesn't faze me at all anymore.

If the shop side is on your left, doesn’t that leave your right side exposed, therefore you can be approached?

The thumbs down wasn't a response to you if you care to check who I was responding too in the same manner as the laugh faces at me .

I did answer your question by stating that when I questioned two of the so called chuggers. Their response was they are told not to approach people walking close to shop or building walls on any side.

I do suggest you read my response and to whom I respond to before posting your vitriol towards me. Thank you. !

Yes, "chuggers" (street fundraisers) are allowed to approach you, but there are rules they must follow, including not stopping you from walking or blocking doorways. They cannot make you "stop involuntarily or change direction," and they must stay a certain distance from shop doorways, cashpoints, and other areas.

What you should know

They must respect your path: Fundraisers are not allowed to block your way or follow you for more than a few steps.

They must not block doorways: There is a restriction preventing them from standing within 3 metres of a shop doorway, a pedestrian crossing, a cashpoint, or an entrance to a station.

You can refuse: You are not obligated to talk to them. You can simply keep walking, and they are not supposed to follow you closely.

It's about personal space: The rules are in place to prevent harassment and protect your personal space. If their behaviour feels intimidating, you can walk away and, if you see a police officer, report it.
