Earlier the magnificent Food for Thought came on my randomised plays on Spotify. It left me wondering if UB40 are the most tragic (musically) of anyone else in 20th century popular music. They were writing wonderfully melodic, original and politically charged records like above and then out of the blue covered Neil Diamond and watched it top the charts not just here but everywhere including the States. Spent the rest of their career churning out crap, second rate reggae covers of other people's songs.

Tragic.

I think their best song was called “Tell me it isn’t true”. It’s on the end credits of the superb film entitled “Speed 2 : Cruise Control”

Well that's just ended 45 years of me thinking the first line in that song is "i'm a prima donna..."

I agree, OP. They have become a parody of what they were when they started.

Their first couple of albums are great but once they started down the covers route they lost any credibility that they had. Now there’s two versions of the band and the Campbell brothers don’t speak. A couple of the original members are sadly no longer with us too.
