Would suggest checking the Foreign Office web site for travel advisories before booking anywhere as some places or areas can be more dangerous, and not always in the news here. My late parents went to Kenya around 30 years ago staying in a resort north of Mombasa - they said it was beautiful there, however a few years later there were a spate of abductions from border incursions, so best to understand local conditions and risks.

As above, don't assume places are safe just because they were recently. Get up to date advice from an official source. Some countries have very specific guidance as to where they are and are not safe.

Although it's prudent to check GOV advice RE: safety etc, I've found that it isn't particularly helpful unless the currently is currently at war, or something extreme like that.

Perhaps it survivors bias, but I've travelled to and lived in a few of the so called most dangerous places in the world and never felt unsafe. I think it depends to a degree on luck being caught in unfortunate things that can happen anywhere in the world, or your appearance/gender/confidence you exude. And most 'dangerous' places I've found generally are labelled as such because of conflicts within local communities which raises official crime rates, not towards tourists.

Also depends what sort of holiday you want. It's a vast and varied continent. If you're looking for a package all-inclusive type thing, then the red sea coast of Egypt is the best bet. If you're into trekking ancient rainforest with nearby Savannah for safari type experiences, Uganda is amazing.

If you’ve never been on an African safari you should do it. It’s a lifetime experience that you must do in Kenya.

Namibia, Kenya, Rwanda Zambia and Senegal are each beautiful in thier own ways. I liked Senegal but its the most basic, but still got some nice hotels. Kenya is a bit touristy for my liking and safari was better in Zambia. For luxury cant go wrong with Zanzibar.
