Read about some woman who took £1k a week for life instead of £1M lump sum.

MY QUESTION THOUGH (let’s make it more fun)

Would you take

£3k a week forever OR

£1M lump sum

'A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush' as the old adage goes, take the £1m and see a professional financial / investment consultant, but don't let the power of money cloud your thoughts.

When I started work a pint of beer was 10p a pint. So in 50 years that 3k a week will just about get a pint.

I'm 70yo I'm taking the million quid.

Either way be quiet about it (stealth rich), find something to occupy your time and live off the interest not the principal. Watching someone who said expecting about 3 to 4% on principal so for £1M the weekly amount may turn out to be the better option 🤷🏻‍♂️

£52,000 per year is 5.2% return on £1M. Can you do better than 5.2% with £1M?

I'd probably take the 3million for a few reasons. 1, I could help my close family and friends. 2, if I took the 3k and died amonth later the money would stop. 3, I could enjoy the rest of my life doing what pleased me without living over lavishly and going mad spending. Just happily ticking along.

Hmm

With £1million you could invest £670k into index funds and make £50k per year passively, use the rest of the money for buy to let house, and collateralise them into more houses, so more houses you can rent out.

Although, I could more than happily live on 12k per month without doing any of the work above

Savings rates are around 4% at the moment, so around £40k per annum less tax. I'd struggle to live on such a pittance.

I'd take the million so that I don't have to stay alive long enough for the three thousands to be worth it.

In Skye there'll be banks in which to deposit your lump sum but, I’m guessing, a shortage of holes in which to deposit your load(s)!

Viv Nicholson & her husband won £152,319 in 1961 which is the equivalent to around £4 million today.

They blew it all in around 3 years.

Her husband was killed in a car accident and when she died in 2015 she left less than £2000.00 in her will.

At the time of the win she was asked what she would do with the money.

Her famous reply "SPEND, SPEND, SPEND

We’ve got a cottage in Glenelg and we catch a ferry to Skye, lovely place, terrible for any gay hookups though

I know 3 millionaires - one through property, one through inheritance and one owns his own business. You’d never know if you met them.

Suppose you'd have to weight it up. Wpuld take you 20 years to tecpip the 1 million. After that you are taking in more. But you'd probably find it hard to get that full lump sum in the bank account!

Civil service pensions allow you the option of taking lump sums but it reduces your monthly pension amount

Everybody takes the maximum lump sum

You could die tomorrow and that money's gone, the lump sum is safely in your bank account.

Id take the million every day!

The OP proposed only £3k/wk, not £1m/day 😉

If the woman was very, there is some sense in the choice she made. She might get this money for 60 years.
