World Cup boycott

There has been sort talk in various news outlets of as yet a couple of countries boycotting the world Cup over Trump trying to bully the world into submission over his desire to take over Greenland and ultimately all the America's

So what do we think about this?

Personally I'm not a great football fan anyway so from th sport prospective I'm not bothered about it, but as a spectacle and event it's huge.

Do we think Trump would care if a large number of the world's teams didn't attend in protest? Would it make a blind bit of difference?

I do love my football and watching the World Cup especially. However a boycott may have some affect if only to upset Trump as he doesn’t like to be questioned or challenged.

.

The world cup and Olympics are incredibly important to him as big events are his favourite things. He wants to be loved by the world.

Still I don't see a boycott happening unless he actually invades Greenland prior to either event.

"Personally I don't think Trump will give a toss"

Disagree - he would hate to miss the chance to show the world “how great America is”.

It will just leave more seats for the goons that shout U.S.A., U.S.A

I'd boycott them anyway if I had any interest just over the amount they are charging for a seat

"They didn't boycott the WC in Russia after they invade Ukraine. They won't boycott this. "

The World Cup was in Russia in the summer of 2018. Ukraine was invaded by Russia in February 2022.

However Mystic Meg carried out a one person boycott of the final.

Funny, last time I checked Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

Who wants to encounter the US customs just for a football game ?

Especialy the games involving latino nations.

Not to mention the US crowd chants.

Given his increasingly irrational (even by his standards) behaviour, maybe he'll do the world a genuinely profound favour and shuffle off his mortal coil before a ball is kicked. About the only thing he can do that would truly warrant a (posthumous) peace prize.

Team USA will win anyway, even if they dont and they won't Trump will claim a victory anyway... I cannot believe FIFA awarded the USA the tournament, and given recent events at the ACON (Africa Cup of nations) FIFA have been proved toothless. Spineless and corrupt

If enough countries said we are pulling out it would not only make the World Cup pointless but it would also mark the end for the leadership of fifa after he presented Trump with that peace trophy, the sycophantic prat

He would be incandescent if, somehow (unfortunately, unlikely), audiences /viewing figures took a nosedive and it was a huge financial flop. Both tRump and FIFA deserve bloody noses!

Football means nothing to me, whatsoever, I'm totally devoid of the necessary software to take even the slightest interest! I remember getting taken as a 5 year old one cold wet January Saturday to watch the local town play, it was the most miserable experience of my life at that stage, the biting cold, wet, guys running around chasing a leather football, yelling, covered in mud, spitting and guys in the crowd shouting abuse at the referee seemed like insanity to me, I remember the delight of being back indoors getting a warm by the fire!

The huge allure is that the Greenlanders are sitting on a treasure trove of rare earth elements, including neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, and terbium, which are crucial for modern tech like electric vehicles and wind turbines. The island's mineral wealth also includes uranium, iron, copper, zinc, and gold. The US, China, and Russia are all vying for a piece of the action, with Trump's administration pushing to secure Greenland's resources.

The Arctic region is becoming increasingly important geopolitically, with new shipping routes emerging as the ice melts. But extracting these resources won't be easy – the harsh environment, lack of infrastructure, and environmental regulations pose significant challenges.

The World Cup only happens every 4 years.

Wales are yet to secure their place at the 2026 World Cup ...right?

The great Bill Shankley once said: 'some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that' And that's why there won't be a boycott.

Trump will be doing his utmost to piss off the Euro/FIFA countries up to and through the World Cup. May find bans on players who have posts that are "unamerican". They could move the US fixtures to Europe at reasonably short notice.

Interesting point. Prevent all the top foreign players from entering the country because of some age old remark online. Rigged fight!

'....a group of 23 politicians from Labour, the Lib Dems, Green Party and Plaid Cymru have signed a motion in parliament, asking for major international sporting bodies to suspend the US.

They claim that major sporting events "should not be used to legitimise or normalise violations of international law by powerful states"'.

And I bet you the same 23 hand-wringers signed a motion calling major international sporting bodies to suspend Israel over Gaza.

But I bet the 23 didn’t sign any motion for major international sporting bodies to suspend China over the persecution or genocide of the Uyghurs or the treatment of Taiwan or the crackdown on human rights in Hong Kong.

Or ask for the suspension of Sudan over their bloodthirsty civil war. Or Ethiopia over the bloody war and incursions into Eritrea. Or Yemen… or…

Oddly predictable stuff.

Why would 'international sporting bodies' listen to a bunch of anemic lefties cobbled together from labour/lib-dems/greens/the welsh ones ....?

Ed Davey and Zac Polanski threatening to go on a hunger strike are they?

Better still ... they could recreate John and Yoko's 'Bed-In' from 1969.

That'll grab the headlines and no mistake.
