The January 31st deadline is looming for those of us who have to pay annual self assessment income tax. Trouble is they've made it more difficult to pay. What used to be a simple online transaction is now a nightmare if you are not 100% computer savvy. don't understand apps or haven't got a smartphone. After several attempts and hours wasted I have written out a cheque and posted it 'snail mail'

Fortunately not me although I did fall foul of them once many years ago when I was supposed to self-assess (back then it was a £100 fine for each late declaration; I kept ignoring the reminders because I wasn't aware I needed to self-assess, and it ended up totalling five grand. A debt that HMRC thoughtfully sold to the Irish revenue once they realised I'd moved, and had to be paid back in increments).

Also had a massive run-in with HMRC over what they thought was a £13k overpayment of working tax credits when I was part-time for a couple of years. That one stressed me the fuck out, gathering several years worth of bank statements and payslips to prove I hadn't been in the wrong. I ended up with a perfunctory "nothing needs to be paid in respect of this" letter but nothing resembling an apology. Not that I was in a position to pay anything anyway, but if I had rolled over and paid up I'm sure they wouldn't have been in any hurry to rectify that.

While I do believe in fair taxation and everyone paying their due for the benefit of society as a whole, I really fucking hate the tax system and its attack dogs.

Although if they think you've left any worthwhile assets behind they may still pursue your family.

"What’s changed ?"

To access payment you have to go through endless codes and passwords. Have to try and prove who you are. Tried it and it kept coming back to the same thing. They gave a helpline number but, needless to say, there was an eternal queue before you get an answer. Does anyone try to make payments to HMRC as a scam or a bit of a joke?

I can’t agree: I recently paid my self assessment amount and the process was simple, quick and efficient. They provide payment method options that work without difficulty if you follow the simple on-screen instructions.

Honestly , this move to having to do everything on line or through an app, can drive me to insanity . Try getting a bank statement from Barclays for an account that doesn’t have an online presence. Took a 2 hour phone call .

I tried for 3 hours to speak to someone at HRMC about £67 pounds I allegedly owe that’s triggered a near £700 reduction in my tax code . OP has my sympathy

Its why I always prefer to communicate by email with any organisations whenever possible.

It means you have written proof of any conversation and what you were told.

Good for you or perhaps lucky you. I've managed it other years where it has been simple and straightforward but not this year. True I am not exactly computer savvy but I'm not thick either. I manage online banking and online payments for most things. The HMRC just kept taking me round in circles and got nowhere.

I might also add that, although I have been receiving emails from HMRC 2 OR 3 times a week for the last month or so, they are all 'no reply' emails. Despite an extensive search I could not find an HMRC email address to write to. For contact they gave either a 'snail mail' address or a phone number.

Same here.

All that was needed was your debit card and your UTR number.

Plus internet access and a computer (and the money in the bank...)

From my perspective it has became easier to pay HMRC. A cheque is now not the best way to pay HMRC.

- Have you tried downloading the app? It works a dream for self-assessment.

- Pay be BACS. Your payment reference is your UTR with K on the end. But doubt check. It will be on your last tax return.

- The information will be on your last bank payment if you saved it.

- HMRC bank/ payment information will be in the letter from them requesting tax payment.

VERY IMPORTANT: HMRC will NEVER email you requesting tax payments.

Hopefully the cheque gets to the correct department

As I have said before I do not understand Apps and neither of my computers will download them. I received acceptance of my self-assessment, by post, last May. Never had a problem making an online payment before. Always been easy and very straightforward. No idea what the problem was this year.

Whether posting a cheque is a good idea or not it is done now.

The deadline coming up is for the tax year ending April 2025, if you've just set up you've got another year before the next payment deadline

Got an accountant to sort all mine. Granted its cost me a few quid, but by god makes life so much easier and she knows the score, whats tax free, loop holes etc. I logged on yesterday and paid it, took about 10 minutes.

Honestly if she didnt set it up for me, id be telling them I earned under the amount, ive herd other people saying its taken ages.

Use a computer instead of an app then it's straightforward to pay on HMRC gov pages. LibreOffice spreadsheet for the sums, submit, then wait a few days for HMRC to verify what you owe, pay by BACS.

I had to pay last year for a sideline I was doing alongside my employer.

It is a bit daunting tbh, but once you get the hang of the mobile app it's straightforward.

If you are a new trader, you need to register and obtain a UTR from HMRC essentially registering your business with them. This has to be obtained before 5th October of that tax year, and the UTR can be used for every tax return.

Also, if you are paying tax through an employer and also you also receive money for work done outside from the employer, ie side hustler you are tax exempt on the first 1000 pound. On the tax return, you calculate the tax to be paid and deduct 1000 pounds.

Generally Apps are on your mobile phone, on a computer you either need to download and install a software package or use a website.

To add to the post you quoted I do possess two mobile phones but neither are smartphones. Never really felt the need for one. I do possess a computer--two in fact, a laptop and a desktop. Although I've been using computers for years I am completely self taught. Don't understand Apps and software packages. Never had any need of them.

I did my tax self assessment for the year 2024-2025 last May. Sent it off and it was approved, with a minor adjustment, by the end of that month with the instruction that I had to pay, what I owed, by 31st Jan.2026. Didn't see the point of parting with said money earlier than is necessary.

If you completed you tax return in good time, as you say you did.

You will have been sent a statement confirming how much you owe

Part of/ attached to that is a Bank Giro Credit form already completed with all the necessary details.

You could pay this at your bank or a post office...
