Turkey is officially a secular state, but in reality a Muslim state.

I was in Istanbul last year and I apply the same rules as anywhere - be respectful of the locals, don't flaunt it , keep away from anything that feels off and generally you'll be ok.

Grindr and other apps don't work properly in Turkey, but a VPN gets around this easily.

Don’t know about Alanya, but I was in Antalya last spring and Fabguys worked OK. There seemed to be a handful of guys within 30 miles anyway, lol

I think a big chunk of the people in the hotel were Westerners anyway though, and I was hardly going to flaunt being bi over there in general

Alanya's an excellent choice. I once stayed there for a week. German sphere-of-influence then, may still be. I certainly wouldn't advertise The Gayness anywhere in Turkey, though. The police do keep an eye on solitary foreigners, but just enjoy the beach and the castle and you'll be fine.

Why would you need to disclose to anyone that you are gay?

Just to add that the LGBT clock is currently going backwards in Turkey. Erdogan likes to keep his religious nutters onside, just like Trump:

Did you know...?

Homosexuality is banned in the Turkish Forces. However, it is regarded as a psychiatric illness, and is grounds for a medical discharge. Until 2015, in order to be discharged, the soldier had to provide photographic evidence of being buggered.

Things have obviously changed or we just read the signs wrong at the time. In 1987 on a naval NATO exercise in the med we berthed alongside the Turkish ship on a couple of occasions. As we were working med routine we used to scrub the upper deck early morning & as it was warm we were all topless. Without fail the upper deck of the Turk ship would be lined with their crew just watching us until we’d finish. Then when we went ashore we obviously had to walk through their ship to get on the jetty, again they would line the cross passage and just stare at us. When we went on a NATO organised tour in Spain whilst waiting on the jetty they all lined up holding hands. At the time it was bizarre.

I've got to ask the obvious question.

Why are you travelling to a place that has feedback about which you're "not very comfortable"?

Didn't you check before booking it?

I did get the impression, during a month backpacking in W. Turkey, that the locals were a bit more tactile than we are - not necessarily sexual, though. The only approach I had there was from a working girl who followed me doggedly round the Istanbul Archaeological Museum for an hour. She may have been police, though...There's also a faintly unsettling tendency among the forces to act in drill-like unison...as in jumping up and shouting when Trabzonspor score a goal, (for instance). Absolute simultaneity, much more disciplined than UK fans.

Just don't act like a gay man in any Muslim country ... and it shouldn't be an issue for them, or more importantly ...you.

I went to Side in Turkey a few years ago and I found the foreigners and guest staying, mainly Russians at that hotel that were more homophobic. The locals were really friendly

Why on Earth did you choose to book a holiday in a Muslim Country if you're worried about how the locals react to homosexuality?

Hand holding is extremely common in the arab (and neighbouring countries). Took me a while to get used to see a bunch of blokes all walking down the street to a mosque holding hands, but once youve seen it a hundred times you get a tad bored of it.
