"I know this is going to sound stupid but do these alarms run on batteries? If so change them as it might be tripping out the alarm, this would happen with battery operated fire alarms in the mid 90s now all fire alarms are hard wired to the mains electric. " All smoke/fire alarms are NOT hard wired to the mains. The battery powered ones tend to have 5 year battery life.

But precisely calibrated to ensure that the battery will run low enough to start warning you at between 3 and 4am.

"I have a Nest combined fire and carbon monoxide alarm it's wired into the mains and has a battery backup, sends a status report every month by email but after 10 years it will tell you to renew it, cost me £100 from screwfix." I have a battery powered Nest combined. Great investment and yes, even tells you, verbally, if batteries are getting low.

"Mine started going off one night in the summer, only gas appliance we had was a central heating boiler which wasn't on. Took it out into the garden still alarming. It has a built in battery and no on/off switch so turned it off with a hammer! " Exactly the same thing happened to mine, with the same outcome. Most CO alarms have non-replaceable batteries. They probably claim that they are safer, but I reckon it's just so they can sell you another one when the battery fails.

Why do they never start warning you about needing a new battery at 9am!?!

" I don't think the Nest detectors are compliant with Scottish standards " With Sottish Govt requirements you mean and you're right they're not. Like a lot of the stuff Holyrood has "thought up" they've standardised the alarms required. Necessary in some home yes but not in others. Bungalows for example and depends on the layout of the house. If I sell up I'd need to fit the crap required but I'm more than happy and feel safe with the nest combined alarms. Plus I also.have a log burner and a CO alarm is included with th installation.

Might be worth checking your home insurance as well, mine was worded "legally compliant" which Nest isn't - I don't particularly like the interlinked ones as it means you don't know where the issue is and the previous ones I could hear in any room.

"If its on battery, I think they need replacing after ten years they may go off of the battery is low." The sensor lasts from five to ten years, depending on type. If over five, play safe and replace the unit, not just the batteries.
