Essex (Epping) / Central London

I was reading an interesting article recently about London gay venues that are no sadly, no longer…

The Coleherne in Earle’s Court / West Brompton for example. It sounded incredible from what I read about it back in the day.

I’d love to hear your memories of other gay London venues that are now no longer here…

XXL moved to Club 360 in Tottenham when Pulse closed. Not been so I dont know if the same raunchy vibe lived on.

So many Places in London and other towns and cities have gone. Besides the Coleherne, others that I remember from back in the 80’s include The Queens Head in Tryon Street Chelsea, The Salisbury (in the film Victim), Copa’s, Harpoon Louis, and The Black Cap to name a few.

Waterlooville at night

I remember the Coleherne, as Earls Court and the Kings Road was my stomping ground in my late teens and twenties. I didn't spend much time in there, as I was into cafe society, and a lot of sexually active girls. The Troubadour was a folk clubalmost next to the Colherne, and Dinty Mores was a cafe on the other side of the side road next to it.

The Cafe des Artistes was a late night pickup dance venue a bit further up the road.

The Sans Souci was an all night cafe that was used by "off duty" working girls, and I had some interesting conversations there. There were a load more folk cafes like L'Ambiance in Queensway.

My gay activities were really confined to cottaging, as they provided lots of opportunity for sexual gratification and variety.

They were great times.

Brownies Sauna in Streatham - party nights used to be a lot of fun.

Planets on Piccadilly- went straight and went bankrupt.

Moving out of London there was The Noah's Ark in Windsor

The Greyhound in Guildford.

The Cellar (or Ralph’s) a private party in Farnham, Ralph dug out the basement footprint of the house and built his own disco - every 2 weeks alternate Fridays and Saturdays.
