London Gay Venues That Are Long Gone

Essex (Epping) / Central London

I was reading an interesting article recently about London gay venues that are no sadly, no longer…

The Coleherne in Earle’s Court / West Brompton for example. It sounded incredible from what I read about it back in the day.

I’d love to hear your memories of other gay London venues that are now no longer here…

XXL moved to Club 360 in Tottenham when Pulse closed. Not been so I dont know if the same raunchy vibe lived on.

So many Places in London and other towns and cities have gone. Besides the Coleherne, others that I remember from back in the 80’s include The Queens Head in Tryon Street Chelsea, The Salisbury (in the film Victim), Copa’s, Harpoon Louis, and The Black Cap to name a few.

Waterlooville at night

I remember the Coleherne, as Earls Court and the Kings Road was my stomping ground in my late teens and twenties. I didn't spend much time in there, as I was into cafe society, and a lot of sexually active girls. The Troubadour was a folk clubalmost next to the Colherne, and Dinty Mores was a cafe on the other side of the side road next to it.

The Cafe des Artistes was a late night pickup dance venue a bit further up the road.

The Sans Souci was an all night cafe that was used by "off duty" working girls, and I had some interesting conversations there. There were a load more folk cafes like L'Ambiance in Queensway.

My gay activities were really confined to cottaging, as they provided lots of opportunity for sexual gratification and variety.

They were great times.

Brownies Sauna in Streatham - party nights used to be a lot of fun.

Planets on Piccadilly- went straight and went bankrupt.

Moving out of London there was The Noah's Ark in Windsor

The Greyhound in Guildford.

The Cellar (or Ralph’s) a private party in Farnham, Ralph dug out the basement footprint of the house and built his own disco - every 2 weeks alternate Fridays and Saturdays.

In the 70s I visited a gay strip club in a basement in Soho, can’t remember what it was called. Black walls, ceiling and carpet, very dark, small stage with naked men dancing about, men in the audience with coats bouncing up and down on their laps and a slippery floor!

Snap, I did also early to mid 80’s. That was when the entrance was on the right hand side of the house, before he finished digging out on the other side by his decks. Then the entrance was moved to the left hand side of the house.

I think in London in particular a lot of the long time gay pubs ended up being sold off for the land value to have houses built. In the country more a case of moving trade, or change of ownership. Also remember the rate that pubs have been closing and being sold off.

The Block, East London. The first time I went, as a quite young man, I walked in and the barman handed me a herbal cigarette to have a few drags on, the bloke beside me asked "can I suck your cock?", and got down on his knees and unzipped me before my first pint was even poured. Then I headed upstairs and had to squeeze past a musclebear being punch-fucked over the bannister at the top of the stairs on my way into the 'main room'. Practically lived there from that point on. My favourite London venue. God I miss it.

Chariots also had a small sauna near Farringdon underground station, and I had a lot of fucks and sucks there!

Fantasy Video was a bit sleazy, but I still went there occasionally. Best time was when a young fit guy stripped off completely and the rest of us lined up and got sucked off in turn- I was first covered his face in cum.,
