Yes I’ve been several years ago as a change from the usual US city break destinations. Interesting architecturally and the situation by the lake made it more pleasant, but i think once was enough and there wasn’t anything special enough about it to warrant a return visit. I visited one May over the Memorial Day weekend and found it cold so I had to go and buy a pullover as I had packed for warm weather. The city did feel oppressive in some places.

Yes I'm a fan of modern architecture and have been fascinated by the Sears building since reading about it as the tallest skyscraper on Earth in the 1974 Guinness Book of Records aged seven, lol, but yes, oppressive is a good description, also seemed permanently overcast in this miniseries, though that could of course have been a deliberate production decision.

Yeah it is as horrible as it looks. There aren't many nice bits although the business district is modern, clean and shiny. I went for a work conference in February. The hotel was soulless, and the people were in the main as cold as the minus 13 temperature. Definitely not a tourist destination!

Yes I have been, it's a proper city centre rather than a sprall like most US cities. One thing that stood out was the visable number of police officers, but they weren't intimidating.

It is my favourite US city.

From everything I’ve read.. Cabrini Green was grim.. and horrible

But it’s all but gone now.

Chicago is beautiful, of course there’s areas where it’s not so nice but that’s like in every city

The Chicago Loop is very pretty, like most of the USA it is much sunnier than the West Coast of Scotland, even Seattle which has a reputation for being grey has twice as much sunshine as Glasgow

FOREST OF DEAN

I went to Chicago in the Summer a few years back with my wife and kids. We enjoyed the holiday very much and it wasn't as bleak as the excellent TV series portrayed it.

There are lots of city trips to go on and places to visit and lots of bars and restaurants and I'd go back there in a heartbeat.

I think the subject matter of the series was very bleak especially when you realise it was based on fact. It was excellent television but a bit hard to take at times but I wouldn't let it put you off visiting the city.
