According to reports whikst many sti have reduced due to care drugs etc

There has been an increase in cases of mites in pubic area commonly known as crabs

Question is How can you prevent yourself from getting them

They can get under someone’s nails and spread that way rather than body on body contact

How have they increased

Please don’t reply to me privately

Hence why asking questions here for people to share opinions

Crabs are pubic lice rather than mites

Mites are tiny: less than 0.1 mm size, so most will be non visible to the human eye

Commonest mites affecting humans: scabies and eyelash mites (Demodex folliculorum) that may cause blepharitis

Crab lice are visible ~1.8 mm typically they enjoy a free ride clinging onto pubic hair but, sometimes, they can also be found on chest, axillary and facial hair (including eyelashes) and scalp.

A crab louse is not going to get under a nail; transmission is through direct body contact, bedding and shared towels.

Work/Play in London, live in Kent

They are increasing owing to more transmission usually by close body contact including sex.

Easily treated - Permethrin is available over the counter at most pharmacists. The brand name I used was lyclear. One generous dollop and a rub in. Sort by next day.

I had one infestation (after a party so plenty of opportunities for transmission there!) but having only one in my entire adult life is good going I think. Crabs like other STIs are nothing to be ashamed of. Regular testing and responding to signs and symptoms will help us maintain ourselves in prime condition.

As of October 2025 they were not as common as they once were and their prevalence was still decreasing.

Meths and sand gets rid of crabs, pour the meths over the affected area, then sprinkle the sand over. They get pissed on the meths and stone themselves to death with the sand

Caught them twice recently. Sexual health clinic told me not to shave any hair. I applied the cream from neck down to feet, and both times they went away immediately. Itchy little fuckers though!!

I contracted Crabs a decade ago.

I was at an orgy in Oxford . The host was a Doctor from the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford.

There were 5 of us Two Doctors , a Anaesthetist, a security guard and me.

It was a fabulous orgy.

But 2 weeks later I had a really bad attack of crabs. They made my groin so itchy.

It transpired the spreader of the aids was the anesthetist.

So it proves being medically trained does not prevent things like crabs.

But it was a great orgy. The crabs were a price well worth paying.

Just one point to note, you should wash your bedding, clothes and towels as well. Remember they can transfer back from these items

Apparently headlice (Nit) lotion is a good way to deal with them. I read somewhere they're very similar so are affected pretty much the same way. It contains permethrin or pyrethrin which they hate.

Eyebrows and beards are a hiding place for them too. Just don't get the lotion in your eyes.

I know that instances of them in recent years have been low mainly due to more people trimmjng/shaving their pubic area.

Bummer that theyre making a resurgence.

I had them once - the itchy bush was bad enough but the little blighters crawling around in my hairy crack was the worse. I shaved everything as soon as I realised and got some lotion the next day which sorted it out.

Then you have to boil wash your bedding and underwear.

Remember to wash everything at 60 degrees too. Anything that can't be washed at that temperature put in a sealed bin bag for 72 hours. If you’ve got a freezer put the bin bag in there for 24 of the 72 hours.

"Rise Of The Crabs, sounds like a Hammer Horror movie."

There is "Attack Of The Crab Monsters" from 1957. "Scientists become trapped on a shrinking island with intelligent, murderous giant crabs." That was one of Roger Corman's lesser-known productions.

Horror movies often reflect concerns that were prevalent at the time, so as in many sci-fi movies made in those days, it all had to do with radioactivity.

Fish used for Sushi is frozen to minus 70c to kill any eggs, worms or other nasties before it is thawed ready for preparation. I wonder whether a domestic freezer would be man enough for the job in hand?

I think being starved of human blood for 72 hours mostly does the trick so the freezing is very much belt and braces. I can’t remember where I read about the freezing so I can’t quote my source I’m afraid.

Rub honey on your groin and hairy bush.

Won’t make them go away but it does rot their teeth and you get a good sleep afterwards
