I second this.

Also, another Bowie collaborator for a brief period was Stevie Ray Vaughan, often cited as one of the greatest ever by guitar maestros themselves, died tragically and very young.

It is challenging to respond to your inquiry since there are numerous styles of playing the guitar. It is akin to asking who the best athlete is without specifying the sport. We have football, basketball, sprinters, and wrestlers; the same applies to guitar. Personally, I have a passion for blues and believe that Joe Bonamassa is among the best in the current landscape.

You can't narrow it down to one, all genres have their GOATs.

Acid psychedelic, Hendrix no doubt, constantly imitated but never equalled

Metal, Randy Rhoads, best I ever saw

Folk: Martin Carthy, especially when he had a blue Telecaster in Steeleye Span

Folk rock: Richard Thompson who does things with a Strat I sometimes find hard to believe

Prog: Jan Akkerman, the master shredder before the word was coined

Pure blues: SRV although he stood on the shoulders of giants

And yeah you can't really categorise him but Tommy Emmanuel is a genius

Playing guitar isn't competitive, there's no such thing as 'best'.

A lot of the answers here are older, historic choices, probably to do with the age of the poster and what they grew up with. Nothing wrong with that, there are some excellent choices but there are still some younger contemporary guitarists worthy of mention as well.

My pick would be Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, who mainly plays blues rock, along with married couple Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks.

But deceptive. Not many people can play that "basic, easy" stuff with Hank's panache and touch on the wang bar. Technically he's very underrated and because of when he appeared, hugely influential. Pretty much every British rock guitarist will tell you how Hank was their first real hero.

Hey don’t disrespect Prince lol he may not of been a shredder or virtuoso but what he did was amazing anyway, no one else has the feel he has or uses scales the way he did , so from that point of view he is worthy of being rated as awesome !

There cant really be any 'best' musician without any qualifying parameters. No one can be 'best' at every skill and genre so its impossible to compare say a flamenco guitarist with a heavy metal shreader and say one is better than the other.

It's fairly well documented that of Peter Green, BB King said he was the only one (of the Brit blues boom players) who could put a shiver down his back. Quite the tribute. And I also think he was so far ahead of Clapton/Beck/Page in terms of feel and good taste.

Greeny and Rory were by far the best blues players to have come from this side of the Atlantic, although neither was slavishly devoted to the 12-bar format; they both wrote stuff that expanded on it, but both also kept the feel and emotion of it.

There isn't t "the one" greatest guitarist and I m sure every guitarist named above would say the same. They all have different styles, particular to themselves and unique. I ve read so many biographies of amazing guitarists and they all name people they wished/wish they could play like. In Claptons book he talks about SRV, when he opened at the tragic gig immediately after which, SRV was killed in a helicopter crash. Clapton said that SRV opened the nights entertainment and that he was stood with Knopfler and they looked each other, both wondering " how the hell do you follow that?" Cant compare Angus and say he was better than the above, as they played different genres, everything about them as guitarists was different. My list would be very long and almost contradictory.

This is a good shout actually.

George Harrison was a huge fan of George Formby and he said despite the years of practice playing ukulele he could never reach the technical ability of Formby.

Apparently relatively easy to play basic there are devilishly difficult chords to play that Formby did with ease.

Kim Thayil’s big riffs a long with Chris Cornell’s vocals. Many years ago they were compared to Led Zep. Personally I always thought they were far superior minus those huge ego drawn out solos. Still sounds fresh as a daisy some 35 plus years later.

"Ry Cooder"

Ry Cooder knows where the groove is... even guitar god Steve Via was in awe of him when they collaborated on the film 'Crossroads'... watch the guitar duel in the film which ends up at Paganini's door! Ry Cooder, Steve Via... Paganini (the devils violin)! We are not worthy!

At his best when young, blond, skinny and beautiful in UFO. I still can't play his double stopped lead bit in Doctor Doctor after 40 years of trying."

Well I agree with a lot of postings on here, but nobody seems to have mentioned the guy that most guitarists admire and are awed by his talent....Guthrie Govan. There is mention of a lot of classic guitarists (3 most influential guitarists since the 60s I think are Jimi Hendrix, Edward Van Halen & Alan Holdsworth)

, but there are a lot more recent ones like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Greg Howe, John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert, Nuno Bettencourt, Tosin Abasi and the new hot shot guy that a lot of guitarists are talking about Matteo Mancuso! It depends on what you like as there are great jazz guys and blues guys etc. But those named are the guys I most admire!

Haven't read all of the posts but my choices are

Jeff Beck

Gary Moore

Robben Ford

Guthrie Govan

It's a style preference for me not a competition.

I couldn't really give less of a toss for metal shredders, but if you want to see real speed with articulation and clever scales, check out Jan Akkerman on the Focus appearance on The Midnight Special (it's on YouTube). They play it about a million times faster than the record, due to time constraints on their appearance (squeezing a whole six minute song into less than four) and nobody misses a note or a beat.

"Playing guitar isn't competitive, there's no such thing as 'best'.

A lot of the answers here are older, historic choices, probably to do with the age of the poster and what they grew up with. Nothing wrong with that, there are some excellent choices but there are still some younger contemporary guitarists worthy of mention as well.

My pick would be Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, who mainly plays blues rock, along with married couple Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks.

a young current player would be Johnny Strings... check out his jam with Tommy Emanuel on the tube! "

Apologies, my dyslexia showing... I meant Billy Strings ^ Must have been thinking of Johnny (B Goode)

"Clapton said that SRV opened the nights entertainment and that he was stood with Knopfler and they looked each other, both wondering " how the hell do you follow that?" "

When you're God, to be blown off stage by one player (Hendrix) is unfortunate, but to experience a repeat (SRV) smacks rather of carelessness (thanks Oscar)

I was never a great fan of The Ramones. My favourite guitarists from the punk era would be Steve Jones, and Derwood Andrews from Generation X. Not only could they play but both had very distinctive guitar sounds.

I saw both of those live, 3 times each I think. It's a shame their careers didn't carry on at a high level after the premature deaths of their individual front men.

People who play guitar are called guitarists, people who play bass guitar are called bass guitarists, or bassists. It isn't a difficult concept to understand.

I've heard it said that Steve's sound was a half-inched Fender Twin Reverb cranked to 11. If you've ever stood close to a stage where somebody's playing a Twin anywhere above 2, you'll know how loud that is

Even a fuckwit would know a “guitarist “* is one who plays a stringed guitar.

Oxford English Dictionary.

If the topic was about a specific type of stringed instrument then you would have a point.

Except you don’t.

"Prince, the best IMO, but the others, and many others besides, are all awesome.

Prince was a freak, he was a master of something like 24 different instruments, all self taught.

The like we will never again witness."

Most musicians will stick with one instrument better to be a master of one than a jack of all trades but prince was different master of about 30.

He put in the time only other one similar was stevie wonder.

Any way !!!

Angus Young yes a good guitarist in the best Rock n Roll band in the world but his brother Malcolm was,is legendary.

However the very best guitarists to see hear and cum in your little thong to are Adrian Smith , Dave Murry and Janik Kerrs or in other words the Iron Maiden Wall of Metal
