Huge victory for democracy & Nigel

Government forced into yet another humiliating U-turn after, no doubt, their plans to cancel elections and deny democracy would have been declared unlawful in the scheduled High Court hearing of Thursday.

Government also to pay the legal fees of Reform UK, some £100k of tax payers money.

Starmer & this wretched Labour government MUST now call an election after their despicable attempt the old Soviet states would have been proud of.

As for Nigel, again take heed, never underestimate him, as many do.

If you think that about Starmer you haven’t done your research. There are many reasons to not like Starmer but to accuse him of being the same as Farage is just mental. I’m not defending KS, but they are not alike.

It has been announced today so it won't be going to the High Court on Thursday. Even without the court proceedings it has cost £100,000 in legal fees which this foolish, weak government has agreed to pay instead of the Faragites. A ridiculous sum. Of course the odious Farage will be crowing and preening himself as the saviour of democracy when all he has really done is brewed up a very expensive storm in a tiny teacup.

It was Sunak who announced the cancellation of elections in 2023. It's hardly a U turn. No doubt the Soviet backed Farage will take the credit.

Parties running true to form. Labour - another embarrassing U turn, Tories - saying nothing of any use, Lib-Dems - claiming a major victory, when it does nothing to help them, Reform - twisting the truth to make it appear better for them than it really is. Nothing new there at all.

The thing we should be up in arms about, more than anything else, is the £63 million it’s costing the government to change their mind, yet another waste of taxpayers money.

The plan to delay (deny) elections should never ever have got off the drawing board.

To have made it so far, as to be challenged in the High Court, is madness (or incompetence or arrogance). They were never going to win.

Labour (and Tories) have achieved nothing other than indicated they’re frightened of voters; albeit both parties have many good reasons to be so.

The outcome of this naive attempt to stop democracy, is likely to now be a worse result (for them), than if they’d just let the elections run without interference.

And if anyone is naive enough to believe the arguments put forward for the delays, just ask yourself - honestly ask yourself - if you’d be agreeing to these reasons if the Tories were the ones in power and doing this.

Clearly, the High Court was also set to reject the reasons; proof enough.

Reforming [no not the farage worshipping cult} the councils has been on the cards for 2 or 3 years. Should have all been done and dusted by now ready for this years council elections. Electoral Commission or civil servants should be penalised for dragging their heels. Don't normally sympathise with this government but they were only delaying elections. The way Herr Farage talks anyone would think they were abolishing them. Something he might do if he ever came to power.

There's complete fragmentation on all fronts of the UK political scene.

I think we will witness this in the upcoming Denton by-election.

The Greens will make inroads, as will Reform, diluting a Labour vote which only recently sat at 50%+.

There is a saying that the public get the government they deserve. Given the polarised debate and personal attacks on people we don’t know I’m not helpful anything good is about to happen either here or over the pond. Without digging up Brexit, looking at the states makes me very happy to be European (for all its faults). It is a little difficult to not reflect on just exactly who’s playbook activities like blaming the press and regulating them, calling independent judges enemies of the state, claiming persistent bias in any media that disagrees with you and suggesting swingeing cubs to freedoms and human rights because it appears one community is the source of every problem. Sounds very 1930’s

It is interesting that some are more frightened of, and making up all sorts of hysterical predictions for, the future… yet the policies of the past decade (and present day), have resulted in a tangible living nightmare for many, as well as divided, and near-bankrupted, our country.

As such, it could be argued that sticking with the current formula is the greater madness, given it has delivered one hell of a mess.

Also, when it comes to “hysterical predictions”… Starmer seems to be talking us into a war with Russia, rather than just improving our defences. That feels a more likely prediction than those made for Reform/Greens/LD.

Definition of insanity: to keep doing the same, but expecting a different result.

"As for Nigel, again take heed, never underestimate him, as many do."

There's two things I don't underestimate. One is his ability to whip up hatred, division and mistrust with the sort of lies, half-truthes, anecdotes and 'back of fag packet 'policies'' that were formerly the cornerstone of Johnson's time in office.

The second is the willingness of whole swathes of the country to swallow what he preaches without question because it simply appeals to their base instincts. And that's not being disrespectful or patronising - it's evident from countless videos of Reform-supporting mobs out on the streets spouting their bile or in interviews where they shamelessly spew forth their wide-reaching bigotry.

The division in this country right now is clear for all to see and it's a travesty. But I genuinely feel it's as nothing compared to what we'll see if Farage and the mob that support him, achieve power.

Delighted that democracy has been restored, however temporarily. Pity that only Reform made a fuss about the cancelled elections, but the Tories had already nailed their colours to the unitary authority mast. Now the constituent councils are still arguing about the revised boundaries and the whole proposition looks like a complete clusterfuck, which Labour should never have proposed in the first place without detailed consultations and surveys. But who led out this lame measure? Rachel Reeves, that's who.

More like yet more expense for the beleaguered taxpayers thanks to a selfish self publicist. So now the great British tax payer is going to have to stump up for his legal bill, pay for local elections, then pay AGAIN for more elections once the Council Reorganisations are complete.

THANKS FOR NOTHING. Pity you can’t be bothered to turn up and do the job the British tax payer is paying you to do instead of spending all that time doing daily radio shows et al.

Hilarious how the Left think its a bad idea not to cancel elections when they know it will be curtains for them.

Hatred for normal people to vote which is part of our democracy.

Taking away trial by jury to let the state decide a case rather than the people.

This is the 16th U Turn by the most disastrous government in my 57 years.

As if Epstein was not enough for him to step down and call a general election.

Chagos Island fiasco will be the next U TURN

Then after the local elections in MAY

"As for Nigel, again take heed, never underestimate him, as many do.

But I genuinely feel it's as nothing compared to what we'll see if Farage and the mob that support him, achieve power."

If you think this country is split because of nigel farages policies then you are either blind or stupid

"It is interesting that some are more frightened of, and making up all sorts of hysterical predictions for, the future… yet the policies of the past decade (and present day), have resulted in a tangible living nightmare for many, as well as divided, and near-bankrupted, our country.

So instead of taking us into a war, we should vote for the party whose leader is funded by the Russians? "

Did you miss the BBC story where they edited the footage?

Hatred for normal people to vote which is part of our democracy.

Taking away trial by jury to let the state decide a case rather than the people.

This is the 16th U Turn by the most disastrous government in my 57 years.

Well done Nigel , starmer tried to rob the British people of our democratic right to vote ,now we need to force him to reverse the planned robbery on the struggling Brits who run older cars which he plans to raise road tax astronomicaly to force them into buying new ones, which means they are forced into more debt to " grow the economy" .

Very 2 faced as they were originally against it and they put zero effort or FUNDS into winning the court case, Reform did all that. Its time the the Lib Dems are exposed as the left wing opportunists that they really are.

If you vote Reform, you are, simply, a stupid cunt. We've already seen the disastrous effect of falling for Nigel's grifts back in 2016, anyone who falls for his man of the people shtick deserves everything they will suffer under what would no doubt be a chaotic government led by him. They wouldn't stop the boats, which I guess is the only thing you'd want doing, since he constantly tells you to fear those scary brown people. While he pockets MILLIONS for doing fuck all and fulfilling none of his promises. Go ask his Clacton constituents what he's achieved since the General Election. Sweet FA.

I also find the blind hatred of Labour and Starmer rather hilarious. As if the previous 14 years didn't have any ounce of chaos or crisis about them? You people have awfully selective and short memories.

Very much a win as results will indicate the temperature of those who bother to cast a vote. It may not be as dire as Labour think or as advantageous as Reform and the Greens hope .Hopefully it will steer parties to a more progressive approach . It may also give parties the opportunity to change course ahead of the next general election.

They say that 4.5 million will now be eligible to vote in May. I doubt more than 2 million of those will even bother. Probably less. Apathy rules where council elections are concerned. Plus it could be a pyrrhic victory for the Farage. More Reform councillors elected to run around like headless chickens because they have not got a clue what to do once elected. Also it might hasten Starmer's departure if Labour do badly, and he might be replaced by someone who could restore Labour's fortunes at the Faragites expense.

But they were not perfectly good reasons to delay as Starmer, belatedly, was advised by his legal advice and that if he did not concede he would lose.

There has to be truly exceptional reasons, like war or Covid, not for redrawing county boundaries.

I hear now that those that were cancelled before, most recently last May, may have been illegally done so.

The cost excuse is also ridiculous, the moment elections can be cancelled due to cost, means we do not have a democracy anymore.

Starmer would have lost on that

point alone anyway.

Labour, and other self serving cowards of the tories & Libs, were simply running scared for the whirlwind to come in May.

Elections are the very basis of our democracy.

Only Reform defended democracy and it’s a stunning win.

Council elections should be about the candidate and who is likely to do some good to your area e.g. stop your road being flooded, stop your local recreation ground being built on, support your local youth centre etc etc. Instead they have often become a referendum on the government of the day or, in the case of Reform, another boost for Farage's already over-inflated ego.

It was also to try and minimise the possible wipeout of labour at council level. But perhaps the rediscovery of a few token socialist policies will be enough to disguise the fact that labour is now a centre right party under Starmer?

This old chestnut!

Reform MUST be registered as a political party or else they cannot stand in elections.

Reform is also a NON-PROFIT company in order to give more control to the members.

Quite innovative but, really, just a variation of any other political party and how they are structured, Labour founded and still largely controlled by the unions.

I do wish contributors would do their research first instead of posting nonsense.

Vested interests, professional lobbyists and big business whether it be tech, pharma, oil& gas et al dictate policy that most liberal & neo liberal governments follow to the latter. There used to be a distinct differentiation between the parties, you knew where you stood, now it's like a funnel, the narrow bit...they all over promise and under deliver because to do anything other than maintaining the status quo is seen as too radical and "the city" will pull the plug on anything that threatens the financial hegemony. In short we will continue on a steady diet of nothing.

"It wasn't the largest democratic vote in British history. John Major's win was even bigger.

"

Wrong.

The tories won the 1931 GE which was larger than Major’s share.

The 2016 referendum was the largest single issue election ever held in the UK, GE’s are not single issues.

The UK rarely hold referendums.

"I’m actually almost looking forward to Reform winning the next election.

I want to hear all the excuses after 18 or so months, from the leader, MPs and supporters, for nothing changing, or most stuff getting worse."

It's early 2031. Half of industry and most of the social services are on strike. The NHS is in chaos due to government underfunding. Prime Minister Farage has just flown to Moscow as a guess of Putin after spending the last couple of months as a guest of President Vance in the USA. DPM Tice is in Dubai where he spends most of his time. Chancellor Jenrick has just borrowed Diana Abbott's abacus to help him work out the budget. The petition to dissolve parliament and have another general election has now got over 4 million signatures.

I was always brought up to not declare who you'll vote for.

No way am i voting for Labour Tories Libs or Greens. Not much of a choice thereafter.

How about we do what they dud in Brewsters Millions and vote for

None of the above

Nigel Farage said he would do something and he did.... unlike most politicians.

And It should be the Labour Party who pays Reform's legal bill, not the government/UK taxpayers.

Please suggest an alternative?

Almost any party except Corbyn’s left. (If you keep going Left you end up on the Right, just like Communist Russia). "

But if you keep going right you end up with?

Embarrassing to admit you admire Farage ... the champion of Brexit who persuaded 52 percent of UK citizens to vote for an ideology which took away their right to work live and travel freely in 27 other countries. UK citizens punched themselves in the head once and they want more of the same ie Farage. Mad!

It was deemed illegal, so why bother to fight it.

Just a waste of money to have a vote now and again after things change. But why would nigel care about money?

You bought that nonsense too?

Free & fair elections to a democracy is never a waste of money.

Also, councils are required to have a cash reserve at all times anyway for elections, eg unexpected by elections, councils collapsing etc

This was probably THE most obvious reason Starmer would have lost.

And it was just bull shit.

Oh what a shame !!! local councils are complaining about the confusion and pressure caused by Labour's late decision to hold elections after all. Any competent council should have had contingency plans on place as everyone knew the cancellation of the elections was odd and very undemocratic. Get on with the work to make these happen and stop moaning.

If reform runs the country like its running the councils they're controlling they'll bankrupt it in 6 months. Strange how people soon forget most of his MPs are the ex tories who caused this country the damage over 14 years. The same ex tories who had dodgy dealings whilst in power. And as for farage hes the only leader of a UK political party who hosts a show on Russain state TV. He's not a patriot hes a tax dodger and putins man in parliament.

All propoganda nonsense. You talk about corrupt when you have a leader employing a pedophile , denys knowing even when proved he did know, then pay him 1000s as a farewell handshake to keep him quiet. And list goes on. Our country is heading for bankrupsy, stop kidding yourself. Industries closing, investors leaving our shores, unempoyment sky high, ILLEGAL Immigration on maximum limits, Rents going through the roof and more people on the streets than in living menory.

"Government forced into yet another humiliating U-turn after, no doubt, their plans to cancel elections and deny democracy would have been declared unlawful in the scheduled High Court hearing of Thursday.

Government also to pay the legal fees of Reform UK, some £100k of tax payers money.

Starmer & this wretched Labour government MUST now call an election after their despicable attempt the old Soviet states would have been proud of.

As for Nigel, again take heed, never underestimate him, as many do."

And there's Nigel Farage spending less time in his constituency than he spends cosying up to a US President who is on the record wanting to cancel elections and is getting ready to mount a coup.

I find it incredible that lawyer Starmer didn't realise cancelling the elections were illegal.

Be interesting to see how, according to Reed, the advice has changed!

He's failing on unemployment, housing targets, economic growth, the illegal migrant policy, bond rates, the deficit.
