We used to dream of a splinter of Galena, we had to make do with the pyrites. If that was hard to come by we'd extract a filling and use that instead.

My Father, a radio 'ham' made my first radio when I was about 8. No valves, not transistors, just a crystal with a coil and a capacitor. Medium wave only. had it on my bike sometimes with headphones on.
