"But but but but… How else are we going to pay the approximate 9.04 million people aged 16 to 64 in the UK that are economically inactive (representing 20.8%), many of whom enjoy handouts? Don’t pay the lazy f@&@kers: if they can’t be arsed to work let them starve. I’ve worked since I was 18 despite ups and downs (which I was told happens in life so get on with it). These days there’s too many scroungers.

People who arrive at retirement age broke are better off than those that saved a little! What fools we were ; we should have just blown it as we earned it! As you say... come election time, it will be pay back time ^

"To add I find taxing pensioners absolutely disgusting. It should be means tested. And taxing savings is fucking ridiculous. You work hard to save for your retirement to rely less on the state and they are taxing money you've already been taxed on. " We all get “Personal Allowances” which is income that is free from tax, what is disgustingly is the way that the main one has been frozen dragging more people on lower incomes into paying tax. As for taxing Savings, they don’t, they tax the interest earned on the savings, again there is an allowance that is tax free (currently £1k) and if you put that money into an ISA (up to the limit) all the interest or growth for stocks and shares is free from tax. You also get a “Capital Gains” allowance for investments outside of an ISA (the Tories did cut the CGT allowance and the interest free dividend allowance). Also if you want some extra income, you can rent a room under the rent a room scheme that allows you to receive up to £7.5k per year tax free.

Interest earned is taxed although you can earn £1000 in interest tax free. Interest earned in an ISA is tax free.

"No surprise there with a Labour government in power!" Well after the amount of national debt the Tories ran up, WHOEVER won the last election would have had to do something that was going to upset everyone, be that raising taxes, or cutting spending (and the service the spending funds). Servicing the interest on the National Debt alone takes a great chunk out of the taxes raised.

No, after bailing out the banks the national debt was about £1tn, and that was done to prevent the financial system crashing thanks to the worthless US debt that was sold around the world which lead to the global financial crisis. The tories then sold off the holdings in those banks at a loss. When they lost government at the last election they had run the national debt up to just over £3tn. Yes they had to deal with Covid, but they squandered so much money during Covid on useless PPE and Fraud with the Business loan scheme (to name just two things) due to insufficient controls it was beyond belief.

Now a bigger amount will be taken from my small fixed private pension. If it keeps happening there won't be much private pension left.

Now a bigger amount will be taken from my small fixed private pension. If it keeps happening there won't be much private pension left. Thats pretty perverse economics - you're complaining that one pension goes up by (say) £10 which results in a tax increase on the other of £2. It's perfectly rational. I'm a pensioner myself but neither my occupational pension nor my soon to be paid State pension miraculously absolve me of the tax obligations I had when I was working, as some here seem to think it should. On a more general note to others - don't bleat on about the State Pension suddenly being 'taxable'. It's ALWAYS been taxable. It's the relationship with the Personal Allowance that's (subtly) changed.

"We pay a fraction of the tax our parents did. It's a major factor contributing to our utterly broken state. Started with the f#£&!^& Tories way back in the witches time, and successive governments have been too frightened to raise it. If it actually fixed things I'd happily pay more. " This is untrue. The percentage of GDP paid in taxes in the UK is now higher than it was in 1982.

"The freeze in the personal allowance which the Tories introduced and then Labour have continued means that more pensioners are being brought into paying tax. The economists’ term is ‘fiscal drag’. The triple lock on your state pension means that each April more of your private pension will be taxed and in fact they will eventually collect tax due on your state pension as it breaches the personal allowance from your private pension. The state pension is always paid without tax deducted so if a portion of it becomes taxable HMRC will collect the tax from other sources of income. " Thank you for your sensible and non judgemental post.

"Exactly. I've worked hard to save up my small private pension to go alongside my state pension. Now, have to pay tax again on it. Thought my retired years would be comfortable and it is but I have to watch every penny. Having to get the best deals every year for commodities etc is frustrating, tiresome and stressful " You didn’t pay tax on your savings they were tax exempt. Also all the profits made to increase these were also tax free, now you’re drawing down on those tax free savings and you should pay tax it’s fair. If you had had an ISA or any other savings you would have paid tax on those before you put them into a savings pot so they would be tax free. By the way I’m a pensioner and happy to pay my contribution, and yes as the person below has said, taxes before Thatcher were much higher.

"I get it feels wrong to tax pensions, but if you’ve paid into a private pension, you have received tax breaks on those payments for as long as you’ve been paying in. The pension pot is invariably has a higher value than the amount you have paid in, so there is free money in there. Just because you have reached pension age, doesn’t mean that you have stopped using the ‘services’ paid for from taxes collected. So to me it seems fair to be taxing pensions." Exactly

As ever the blinkered Left always forget their gross blunders of their previous times in office. The claim that tax rises were unavoidable is of course completely erroneous!! The government gets some debt interest back via the Bank of England, and economic growth would help with debt. With a £30.4 billion tax surplus in January 2026, it seems tax rises are a choice, not a must! This government's decision is to raise taxes rather than cut spending or boost growth, it's a long standing political preference of every Labour government in history!! Yet the Left blame the Tories as ever!

Pension pots are invested and ususlly earn at better rates than bank interest. Also employers often pay into pension pots on top of the employee contribution. That’s all free money that the pensioner has never been taxed on. Pensioners use services that are paid for from tax so they should contribute for them. I will be getting my pension in a few years and fully expect to be taxed on it. I’ve had the tax breaks etc from paying in, and it’s worth far more than I paid in, so of course it should be taxed.

If I had kids I would tell them not to bother working, don’t save or invest money, contribute nothing to society and just scrounge off the state because you will be much better off in the long run. " Good job that you haven't got kids then. My wife's retired and pays income tax, not happy about it, but it's a small amount. I'm disabled and can't work anymore, we have enough money to live on. Plus still got my pension pot to look forward to. And I know I'll be paying tax as well

"Had letter today stating my new tax code. More tax will now be taken from my small private pension. Oh well, what can you do. I'll remember all this at the next election. The reason is you are earning more and like most people on here you pay Tax on your income. Don’t forget you are only paying 20pence in the Pound unless you are really lucky and pay 40p. Really! Lucky FFS. I work for 4 months of the year for the government so they can pay useless lazy parasites benefits so they cant sit on their fat arses all day. How about taxing any of these waste of spaces who are on more than £12,700.00 like everyone else. To make such a sweeping strong statement; “useless lazy parasites”. I do hope you don’t fall ill or in a position where you need to access benefits. You must be joking! "I’m going to be paying £7.50 out of my state pension come April and I’m not sure how much from a small private pension, got to chase that up" It's not rocket science. Just add up all your yearly income. Anything over the tax threshold you pay 20% tax on it. Or just fill in a self assessment online and it will do it for you.

"People complaining about taxes and seeking to avoid them are traitors, not patriots in my book. As a country we are up to our eyeballs in debt and have a huge social care problem. So many people only care about themselves and not the country, ironically, a lot of them are the flagshaggers" With that logic, every MP and all of the royal family are traitors.

There's no evidence that billionaires a re leaving in any higher frequency than under the Tories. The young are leaving in droves due to lack of opportunity and high cost of living. If you want future tax payers make the place better for the young!
