Do you have a song (not necessarily a clasic) that reminds you of a special summer / holiday?

Mine I'd Substitute by clout 1978.

I'm a huge Bowie and Pink Floyd fan but that pop song reminds me of a special holiday that year.

Mine would be Self Control by Raf.

I did a summer season as a holiday rep in Spain when I was a lad and this was the song that was played in all the bars and clubs.

Everytime I hear it now reminds me of that time in my life.

I'm still waiting Diana Ross. We weren't going on holiday. My parents decided at the last minute to book a caravan at Reighton Gap on the Yorkshire coast. It pissed it down all week. It was cold and miserable. There was hardly anyone there. I was on my own and fed up. The song was playing everywhere. I still feel cold and damp every time I hear it

Music evokes so many memories, it’s been central to my life for many years. Here are a few examples:

Video Killed the Radio Star by Buggles - first girlfriend

Your Latest Trick by Dire Straits - losing my V plates

Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler - reminds me of my dear dad, it was played at his funeral and I still can’t listen to it.

Two Tribes (#1) and Relax (#2) were top of the charts in the Summer of ‘84. I spent a week in San Antonio, Ibiza and the 12” mixes were blasting out of Every bar and club. I was 20.

Smalltown boy. When I moved to Brighton and was able to be part of a gay scene. It was the story of so many of my friends. “The love that you need can never be found at home”

Back in 1978 Sing If You're Glad To Be Gay was quite significant for me, 15 years old, at boarding school, singing along with that was really sticking a middle finger up to the principal, teachers and house masters. But on a lighter note I remember Rat Trap got to No1 and Geldof ripping up an Olivia Newton John/John Travolta (Grease) Poster.

Working in Adelaide in 1975 I met someone and we had a car ride out in the country on a beautiful day.

So, I always remember that when I hear

I used to illicitly meet a former gf in a London hotel and she purposely put ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams on rotation one afternoon when we fucked like absolute animals, for seemingly hours.

It is impossible now not to think of her and what we did, whenever I hear that song. And she admitted that she did it for exactly that reason.

Just as an aside, that song has one of the greatest basslines ever written and played. As a bad bass player and not much better guitarist I can appreciate and credit such genius.

Don’t you forget about me - I was in Majorca 86. First lads holiday. Was there for 2 weeks, but I could only ever remember 10 days of it.

So much beer and sex, it was the time of my life and that song seemed to be in every bar, whatever the bars nationality was.

Really showing my age, but Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree, by Tony Orlando and Dawn, brings back memories of a caravan holiday on the Island of Arran in 1973, when I was six.
