You are being picky. It’s just a way of expressing that you are amused.

Writing “that was funny” or “smiled at that” isn’t quite as punchy.

You could try “Pausing Into Slight Smile” if you aren’t quite ROFLOL. Mostly though it’s the post where they don’t finish the story completely leaving questions to be answered where I could reply “We All Need to Know”

I never use 'lol' as a form of punctuation - as common now as a comma or a full stop. But very occasionally a remark is witty enough to get a genuine LOL! back.
