I need a new flat roof on my extended kitchen.

Always had the melted on felt but told fibreglass is better.

However, I've been quoted £1850 for the felt and £1260 for the fibreglass

Both including full boards.

No experience with fibreglass but led to believe it's superior.

Anyone had either and what would you recommend?

Thanks in advance

Look at using EPDM rubber, it's very durable and doesn't need particular skills to install - you could DIY it if you're reasonably handy. I've got a big flat roof area which was done with EPDM about 30 years ago and it's still watertight.

I used fibreglass over my extended flat roof. Replaced the ply substrate (class 3, was WBP). You need the correct perimeter edging, trims and flashing. Also fibreglass is susceptible to cold temp and cannot be laid and allowed to cure in wet weather. Overall it was straight forward and no leaks. You're supposed to notify Building Control too.

We had a leaky felt roof on a porch of the house we moved into.

We opted for a 'Rubber' roof replacement. Never had any problems with it.

Hope this helps?

EPDM rubber is a far superior product. Far more flexible than fibreglass which can split if there’s too much movement in it. Also you have to get the right ratio of resin to hardener and temperature comes into play when applying.

You can buy EPDM DIY kits online or most large builders merchants can supply. You should be able to find online tutorial if you want to tackle the job yourself

We had a fibreglass roof made for our 17ft x 12ft boat shed at work in 2003 they used grey pigment it looks just as good today as it did 23 yrs ago its never leaked and is strong enough to walk on

Far better than felt or rubber

Think about it boat hulls are made from fibreglass

Its the best out of the 3

We have 2 flat rooves. One fiberglass, the other rubber.

Both have longer life expectancy than felt but I do prefer the rubber one, even though it's pricier.

With neither do you get the perennial problem of grit being washed into the gutter.
