Neverwhere

But surely the fuel in the tanks at the petrol stations was bought at pre-conflict prices. Why the need to charge more for something already paid for? Pure greed!

That’s exactly what it is

It shouldn’t be allowed but like everything it comes down to profits I suppose we will have to get use to it as it’s likely to get even worse

Agree 👍 i have a diesel so thankfully it’s economical on fuel but even so the cost of filling it up has shot up will no doubt go even higher

I’m also a delivery driver and I know much it it’s going to possibly effect the company which is a worry

Fuel prices rise because Uk has virtual zero storage facilities same for gas. It all started when Tony Blair was PM. Also no decision made on nuclear power just put off. Thus we pay 4 times energy costs. We are totally uncompetitive in manufacturing because of this.

Gas storage was closed down in 2017 under the Tories and Hinckley point nuclear power station is still being built also all gas and oil is sold at world prices making a big profit from the North Sea for the oil companies.

I use it it's very good. It updates when a user posts a price change. Not daily.

I'm debating whether to go to France or not. I can look at the fuel prices there too on the app. They are rising just as much as here. Fuel shortages are my main worry. I don't want to be stuck in the middle of France with an empty tank and a ferry to catch

Never mind the price of fuel at the pumps. Many of us have to rely on oil to heat our homes. The price of a litre of heating oil on two weeks ago was 58 pence per litre. Today it is 139 pence in my area, if you can find a company to deliver it.

Definitely profiteering going on... always the same; prices go up straight away, but when the problem for the increase goes away... it takes months if ever for the prices to fall again! Our politicians as usual, missing at the wheel when it comes to protecting consumers!

Yes I do and they used to put it up 2-3p per gallon every budget!

Now they put up 4-5p per litre every budget that =15-20pence increase instead of a cpl of pence that is hardly noticeable

You buy 1000 ltr that’s £150-200 difference!

What’s worse is knowing the British government already tax fuel @ around 60% pre sales as it is

Until the community stops using the worst offenders of profiteering then nothing will change ,

The problem with the brits is we accept being ripped off , from the prices we pay for practically everything before and after leaving europe

Fuel Holidays , cars , food and several governments have done fuck all to prevent this , stating market forces , what crap how can cars built in Sunderland be cheaper elsewhere

Tesco’s have just whacked another 3p per litre on diesel today. Now at £1.509 per litre. Just over a week ago it was £1.389 per litre. So the price has been jacked up by 12p thanks to the tangerine turd floating around over the pond.

Diesel prices vary widely from station to station at the moment. On my drive home earlier I passed several stations. The price of petrol was pretty consistent, at around 138 pence per litre.

But the difference between petrol and diesel varied from around 8 pence at one station, right up to 26 pence at a Shell station.

This has to be blatent profiteering given that all the diesel currently for sale will have been paid at pre-war prices.

I've never understood why diesel is more expensive than petrol, it was always a fraction of the price before diesel cars became so prevelant, it doesn't take as much refining, is less dangerous to transport, so why more expensive... I'm sure that the government wouldn't just hike the price of it because it's so popular.

There's more to UK fuel prices than meets the eye. I've been researching a note on the effects of private-equity buyouts of filling stations (now 55-60%) and how they're loading the companies up with debt and then increasing forecourt profit to service it. The 5% fuel duty reduction of March 2022 didn't drop prices because the PE stations simultaneously increased their forecourt fee by 6%. From a Modern Monetary Theory point of view, this price gouging by very large private equity firms limits what a government can do to promote or limit our spending with taxes, but worse, it constrains the money we've all got to spend on better things - like childcare, tutors, home improvement or just eating healthy.

(...don't get me started on misconceptions about tax and government spending either;-) )

8 pints to an imperial gallon, roughly 2 pints to a litre, therefore... 4 litres to a gallon. Once fuel companies started charging by the litre it gave them the green light to whack the prices up. Most people did not know the difference between gallons and litres!

Apparently diesel does now take more specialist refining these days to remove pollutants that were acceptable years ago. (remember busses and lorries belching out blue smoke?) Also has anti waxing fluids added. But that's separate from the fact, as has already been said, that the greedy bastards are in effect robbing the motorist by hiking prices fo fuel alread in the country!

155.9 per litre for diesel as Asda this morning. When I started driving, you could get 4 GALLONS for £1, and say the the attendant "keep the change" if you gave him a £! note. There is a bit of nostalgia for you - large paper £1 notes and attendants on the pumps.

I on the other hand drove straight to the nearest bp where there wasn’t even a cue at any pump and filled up normally with the expensive diesel as i always do that was maybe 3p dearer than normal (not even £2 different from normal (completely unnoticeable))

Doesn’t look like HMRC have changed the approved mileage rates since the 2011/12 tax year.

Cars are still 45p a mile for the first 10,000 miles, then 25p per mile for anything over.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/rates-and-allowances-travel-mileage-and-fuel-allowances/travel-mileage-and-fuel-rates-and-allowances

Obviously they have no idea of the cost of inflation on running a vehicle (fuel, insurance, maintenance, mot and VED [used to be road fund tax]).

It's also called devaluation of the pound caused by quantitive easing (printing of money by the government in place of a real wealth that doesn't exist!). Charging for fuel by the litre instead of the gallon to hood wink a gullible public into thinking fuel was cheap! If it's your own car there cannot be an obligation or requirement to use it for business travel, even if there was adequate financial recompense.

Somehow, coincidentally, whenever I was required to travel somewhere on business the car was "not available" that day and so I'd go by public transport and claim the cost back on expenses. Not my problem if it took longer to get there or for an early meeting it required a hotel as well.
