Rising cost of fuel

Fuel prices have jumped by 15p, with reports linking it to rising tensions involving Iran and instability in global oil markets.

It’s crazy how quickly events happening thousands of miles away can hit us directly in the pocket. Makes you realise how connected everything really is.

Do you think this is just another cycle of geopolitical tension affecting prices, or could it escalate into something much bigger?

Interested to hear your thoughts

Blatant profiteering by the fuel companies. UK has approximately 5 to 7 weeks of fuel storage so why has the price gone up already!

Greedy bastards the lot of them!

Well I could say it doesn't affect me because I don't have a car but as deliveries use transport then the cost of getting products to use Will be higher so shops will increase prices and ultimately I will have to pay more

That’s exactly what it is, we all know it takes about a week or so to get tanker to the uk and they couldn’t wait to put the price up when it started.

My nearest Tesco increased by 8p diesel from Monday to Tuesday.

Was told yesterday that another 2p at same Tesco garage yesterday.

Will see myself tomorrow if even more.

Price of fuel has risen slightly.

But people panicking has made the situation worse along with price gouging.

Maybe just avoid unnecessary journeys for a while and walk to the shops/schools if possible instead.

The electricity for EVs is mostly generated by burning imported gas.

Totally agree it's just greedy and nothing is done about it.

During the war it was outlawed as profiteering.

It's rife now on everything

But incorrect. Only about 30% (and falling) of UK electricity comes from gas burning power generation. So not "mostly" generated by burning gas (imported or otherwise).

Used used to work for a domestic heating oil company. My old workmates tell me the phones have been ringing non stop for the last week or so, people are panicking and this has let to a delivery time of three weeks, once word get about this drives more demand as customers don't want to run out and it turn drives prices up.

The big worry is diesel shortage, with spring around the corner farns are going to need lots of fuel in the planting season.

Surely, the whole point of running a business is to make profits. Oil companies are going to do this because thats what they’re there to do.

If the opportunity arises to make more profit, that’s exactly what anyone would do.

If you’re at work and the boss is desperate for you to work extra, you ask for more money for overtime than for your usual work. Is that profiteering, because you know the person asking is desperate. That’s the same thing.

As for the government profiteering by getting more taxes in, raising taxes is what governments do. They need them to run the country. If they cut the VAT on fuel, then other businesses would complain it was unfair, so the government would have to cut taxes elsewhere to even things up, and that could cost millions, if not hundreds of millions that as a country, we cannot afford.

But indirectly if the treasury didn't have as much money to spend on critical infrastructure. Schools, hospitals etc they'd soon be up in arms. So you can lower the tax on fuel and raise it elsewhere. Or lower the tax on fuel and crap services.

Trumps illegal war on Iran has given us a world of chaos. All those supporting this war are asking for more boat refugees and punching themselves in the face with rising costs from bananas to fuel. No doubt in tbe longer term his war will also fuel terrorist fanatics. Thats what Trumps vanity project war will give us.
