Like anywhere, if you look you can easily find the quieter parts. I went last year to do the half marathon, great event, but also went to explore. Some nice hiking, day trip on tram to Alicante, old town is lovely. Yes a lot of it is brash and loud, but you get that anywhere. Similar with gran canaria, and off to tenerife soon. Places I thought I'd never want to go, but there is more than sand, sex and booze if you look. | |||

I've done Gran Canaria and Sitges Bear Weeks. Someone here mentioned Alicante.
There are good priced flights from Cardiff. Considering a few days there before catching train to Sitges again, just south of Barcelona.

Benidorm is an absolute sanctuary for people over 60 during Winter. It’s a short flight. Very safe. Clean. Flat. Great transport. Has home comforts etc and is warm all year around.

That doesn't appeal to me so I just ignore and bypass it. Frankly any one who compares Benidorm to Blackpool is bigging up Blackpool in a mega way. " Exactly this. Leave the "new town" area (Europa/Levante side) and simply walk the streets of the Old Town and you'll find a number of LGBT friendly bars, and 3 or 4 which have their own cruising areas for the more adventurous. I've been 3 times over the last 4 years and not once felt endangered. It isn't generally as crowded as the new town, although some bars are definitely busier than others. I'd certainly return. PDI is livelier, but at the end of the day (night) it's all personal preference. | |||

"Ive possibly worked this out. From experience half the time, people who despise Benidorm actually hate it because in reality, they hate other who go there. I’ve had that experience with frenemys and work colleagues who resent me and thus hate Benidorm byproxy (especially when I talk it up as lets be honest it’s comfertably better than Greece, Ibiza, Marbella, Turkey etc )

Meaning for the masses it is crystal clean the next day. Have you seen how british cities and other party resorts / events are left after people have been out drinking????
It has no dog mess. No litter. No shop lifters. No crack heads. No gangs of youths loitering around intimidating people. Its a world apart from modern britain probably hence why so many leave these shores to live there. | |||
