Where to stay in Tenerife

So I'm looking to take myself away to Tenerife in May, but not sure where to stay!

My understanding is South (Playa de las Americas) is more lively. North (Puerto de la Cruz) is more authentic and a bit more chilled.

I'm not looking to be out on beach all day, and like a bit of culture, so will be going for hiking / running / architecture and history.

Love to hear your recommendations

Go somewhere else. Tenerife south is a culture free toilet full of the sort of Brits one would normally go the extra mile to avoid riding around on motorised wheel barrows because they're too bloody lazy to walk. The north is a bit less revolting but gets the bad weather. The scene here is pathetic. If you want slut action go to GC
