Yes, it can be expensive. One month Supply Descovy (emtricitabine 200mg/tenofovir alafenamide 25mg) costs £530. Regular prep is a bit too heavy for me.

The OP is (or should be) referring to DoxyPEP, which is very different from PrEP. But yes, both are available from your sexual health clinics.

And a Hepatitis vaccination as well as regular 3 monthly check ups. There is no excuse really not to look after yourselves.🙂

It's great but please don't forget you have to be responsible too! Don't get drawn in to a false sense of security and put loved ones at risk. Just saying..

Annoyingly, my local NHS sexual health service still doesn’t do doxy. Its not a problem as its dirt cheap and easy to buy in bigger quantity than the NHS supplies anyway, but i'll be having stong words with them on my next prep refil chdck-in.

Doxy Pep has been available by the NHS f.o.c. for a while.

Best not taken just before bed, it can play havoc with heart burn and nausea, it’s a known side effect.

PREP and Doxy aren’t a silver bullet like some ignorant people think it is.

I buy mine in bulk for pennies a tablet. Even if my NHS trust did give it out I'm not sure they'd give me enough, so I'll probably continue to have buy it 😆

Er...

So if you are a smoker. Alcoholic, over weight, you should not be entitled to Health care as that was your life style choice.

You are in a car crash, you chose not to control your car, you got run down crossing the road, you chose not to look properly

You got cancer, obviously you did not follow the correct lifestyle choices.

Extreme, stupid examples, yes of course, but if you say Health care should be based on your lifestyle choices, where do you stop?

It makes sense for the NHS to promote and supply DoxyPep though, prevention is better (and cheaper) than cure.

Let's all get bladdered every weekend and end up in A&E, take up smoking 20 a day and take loads from every willing candidate and forget about personal responsibility.

Good old NHS will look after us won't it because we've all paid in.

There's also a gonorrhea vax now - only 45% effective though.

Available from the NHS though some here might froth at that.

Lifestyle choice? Hmm, thinking much?

A healthy population saves money across the board - vaccination and prevention is benefical for all.

Get your doxy on the NHS, which you have paid for, or buy it privately. Either way, taking responsibility for your own sexual health is the grown up thing to do.

I take Prep and Docy when need not because I am entitled , but because I AM PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE for my sexual health. I know the risks and take measures to mitigate them and get tested regularly.

Is it 100%, no of course not, but the only way to guarantee no STDs is not to have sex.

I'm asking because I'd like clarity, if you use a condom does that negate the necessity for all of these potions? Condoms are free at my local GP Surgery

They're not potions, they are medications. Using condoms significantly reduces the risk of you picking up HIV however Prep is even more effective, heading toward total protection from HIv when used correctly. Doxy reduces your risk from some other STIs but not as effectively as condoms. Nothing is without risk.

On Prep. Have been told I’ll be eligible for Doxy pep as soon as it’s rolled out by the local trust in Cumbria.

Tested every 3 months, have taken up all offers of vaccines Hepatitis, Mpox, Gonorreha.

Constantly surprised by the approach of some to sexual health. Some guys are regularly tested, take precautions, others seem oblivious. Asked a guy recently when he was last tested, his reply… I only realy sleep with women…

Nothing in life is risk free, understand the risks you take and accept the consequences. Don’t make decisions on risk on behalf of others. We are so lucky to have the NHS (with all its flaws) and Nice takes a cost effective approach to medication. Prevention is nearly always more cost effective than cure.

Be responsible and have fun!

Well done.

Instruction:

200 mg dose of doxycycline as soon as possible after condomless sex.

Most effective when taken within 24 hours.

But can be taken up to 72 hours afterward.
