I think there are communities made of people with shared interests or traits - the gaming community, gardening community for us oldies. The LGBT community for some who believe there is a shared cause...

I kinda disagree. We are all in little communities.

I was talking to a friend about HIV and other stuff. If you're gay and frequent gay bars, gents toilets are full of Terrence Higgins Trust resources and similar.

You never see that in a regular pub. Cos there are closeted fellas who never see this educational info.

While I respect your opinion I do think you are massively over thinking this.

The OP’s original thoughts do resonate . In an era where we are falling over ourselves to be inclusive , the proliferation of “ communities “ all vying or demanding to be recognised separately puzzles me. I see people as people. But it seems society is becoming Tribal, but as Thatcher once proclaimed maybe “ there isn’t such a thing as society” ?

Real communities can be positive. The word has become misused and sometimes weaponised in social sciences and politics; especially when it is lazily assumed that a group that share a common trait or characteristic will be assumed to be entirely homogeneous and one member of said assumed community self-appoints and assumes the authority to speak on behalf of every member.

Exactly

People would say today

It’s great We have 2 members of the gay community living next door

Instead we should be saying

We have fantastic neighbours

A few years ago, on another site [long defunct] I admitted to voting Conservative in a general election on the site's forum. I immediately got a nasty message from another site member telling me I was 'a disgrace to the LGBT++++ Community!' What community? Does it really exist? I may be gay but I am not a member of some artificial 'alphabet soup' community. I did try a few years later, after retiring, to join an LGBT group. Wasn't exactly made feel welcome. A bit militant left-wing and obsessed with trans and non-binary issues for which I do not feel an affinity.

That aside, where I live at the moment, is a quiet pleasant neighbourhood. People speak, on the rare occasions I see them, but there is no sense of community.

Also shows a complete lack of misunderstanding of the history of the campaign for gay liberation in the UK. Very much a cross-party effort.

For me the word "community" as it is used currently conjures up an image of a group whose members see themselves as different.

That difference entails the notion amongst the community members that they are special in some way.

Being special seems to mean they expect special treatment and consideration from the rest of society.

For example, they might expect to be treated slightly differently by the law, or expect public funding for spaces they can call their own.

Often they see themselves as victims and demand extra sympathy purely because of the self-designated community that they claim to be part of.

Community now means the opposite of what it used to mean: division rather than cohesion.

I dislike this even more when it's spoken out loud with a glottal stop.

My moan of the day though, is motorcycle/scooter riders who drive along with their feet and inch from the ground, as if they're frightened of falling off.

A community or group can be really important to people, as a sense of belonging and sharing.

If they put their feet down too quickly they'll find a new appreciation for the soles of their shoes...

It's more a case of them not picking their feet up.
