Using a burner 'phone on Fab Guys

It seems that some guys want to have a phone number to arrange meetings. I've resisted this until now, but I've just registered a burner 'phone. I'm only using it for Fab Guys contacts, and I'd be interested to know what restrictions I should put on its use. I'll probably only give the number to friends, and turn it off when I'm not available for meetings or chat.

It has a PAYG sim with no credit, so I can only receive calls. If it turns out to be useful, then I may pay for a plan for it.

I get a lot of useless messages, and they are really quite a nuisance. How can I avoid the same thing happening with the phone. I don't want to use it for sex chat. I just want it so that I can arrange meetings.

I will give it on the understanding it's only for scheduling changes, delays, cancellations or clarification of directions etc. Can't be pestered with random meet requests, or dirty chat.

Be mindful of the "inactivity period" on your payg sim and they don’t deactivate it

Thanks for that advice. I phone it regularly to ensure it stays active.

North London (outer)

I have an easier solution, a dual-sim phone. I've been using these for something like 15 years and am surprised that others don't.

My secondary number is a Lebara SIM, £4.50 a month for 5Gb data with 1000 UK minutes & texts and 100 International minutes. It's on the O2 network and works well. I use this for Fabguys meets or anything else where I don't want to give out my main phone number, which can be Googled. I also tell people that I prefer text to voice calls, which most respect.

It is an outbound call (or PAYG top up) that is required to keep the SIM active in most cases.

You can always tether your burner to your main phone and then use messaging apps such as teleguard which don't require a phone number to use.

Ee tells me that inbound calls keep it active as well. However, I may add a fiver to the account every six months.

I have what a call my grinder phone, it’s always switched on I just have the ringer switched off when I’m at home

I keep it topped up via a top up voucher from Vodafone (with cash from any shop)

Very rarely used for phone mainly for WhatsApp
