STOCKTON-ON-TEES

So, I'm looking at buying a campervan for a mid-life reset. It dawned on me actually I could use it for hookups... and thought I'd ask what is the best type out there for this do you all think?

I like the look of the VW Cali - but would prefer a H2 / Height sized one so a lad can stand up in it?

Thoughts and experiances welcomed x

I have a fiat ducato but all the similar vabs are pretty good, Peugeot or Citroën or even an MAN if you have deep pockets. Avoid over 6mtrs long if thinking of going on ferries as the price rocket then. Go for a high top obviously for head room. There're many different layouts inside, you just have to decide what best suits you. Beds across the van can be tight lengthwise if your 6'or more. So many options.

I've got a 17 seater Sprinter bus that I'm converting, I can fit a shortie caravan mattress across it. It's a brilliant vehicle to drive, and as it's a 2005 vehicle, it's got what I consider to be the best diesel that Mercedes made.

I;ve also got an LDV Maxus with a wood burner, and has an Italian engine. This is super reliablem but it's a bit slow.

I think you need a hightop van, and it needs to be a 3.5 tonne version.

Internal conversions can be designed to suit your requirements.

There are loads of YouTube videos about converting vehicles.

Had one years ago. A VW Camper on an H SUFFIX Reg. Good old war-horse. Had quite a bit of fun in there with other guys.

I’ve got a low mileage Citroen relay conversion. The only thing wrong with it (other than looking dated inside) is the paint job which flakes all the time.

So I I know a lot of caravan sites don’t let converted vans on only official camper vans

There will be sites that do allow them but just check before rocking up to avoid disappointment

I've got a Devon Monte Carlo. Based on a Renault master. I'm 6 foot and can stand up in it. Bed across the back and I can lay in that. Fridge, full size cooker. Central heating We've been all over in it. Scotland and France. Planning on Wales if fuel hold out. Don't need a special license and it's not mega expensive on ferries

As an owner let me tell you they are expensive. To be comfortable you really need a 4 berth and that will cost £20K for a starters. Fuel and insurance plus storage if you cannot park at home adds upto a hefty sum. The upside is you have a mobile bedroom for cruising 24/7.

Never had any issues with any caravan sites not allowing me on, my vw t6.1 converted van , no more expensive to run than any other van either, it’s just a van with mods inside, pop up roof to give the height when parked but collapsing to get under barriers, they are however expensive to buy if looking for comfort
