Mike Monroe of Hanoi Rocks was a style icon for me, I dressed like him as much as I could.

And New York Dolls were the template for all of em. Terrible musicians (mock rock as Whispering Bob memorably called them) but all attitude and camp, piss and vinegar.

G'n'R were the only true inheritors of New York Dolls in the sense of having punk attitude allied with actual musical ability the Dolls never had, and they did truly kick ass around 1988 or so and Appetite For Destruction and could have been the new Stones, but they were one-album wonders and disappeared up their own asses once the money came in like so many others.

RUNCORN

Totally get the topic. I remember seeing a pic of a young John Sykes in Whitesnake with no top on, and his jeans open. Couldn't work out why I felt so confused

Hanoi Rocks were the step in-between.

Hanoi modelled themselves on NYD (but could sing and play) and GnR have said that without Hanoi they wouldn't have formed.

The GnR song Welcome To The Jungle references a line in Hanoi Rocks' song Underwater World from the Two Steps From The Move album.

Girl were before their time too (feat. Phil Collen later in Def Leopard). Super glam and rather camp, and slated by most of the NWOBHM crowd for their distinctly unrugged looks

"Chris De Burgh had Lego man like hair.

Chris de Burgh the legendary metal mayhem party animal!

That bit where he literally squawks "Don't pay the ferryman!" is metal gold. And Lady In Red Leather is basically heavier than Judas Priest.

To be fair, Don't Pay the Ferryman is a great track.

NYD shaped it for sure, Poison , Motley Crue , GnR, Bon Jovi etc and all that shite were everything I fucking detested back then. Utter nonsense and the world was a better place without them. I was more Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Social Distortion, Cro Mags & so on. I loved hardcore but didn’t mind the big 4 when it came to metal.

Hüsker Dü and Dead Kennedys for me. And Teenage Fanclub were noise monsters early on (Kurt Cobain idolised them before he was famous).

Girlschool were fucking nails too, and Kelly at least had big metal hair.

To my mind the archetypal 'Hair Metal' bands would have been Motley Crue, Poison, possibly Ratt, Tygertailz and that kind of band. Maybe add in Warrant and Cinderella.

Around the same time, Thrash Metal was coming through which was much more to my taste in the sense of what Heavy Metal ought to sound like
