Paid to use electricity

Today, Octopus will be paying me to charge my cars! All that Green energy flowing into the grid means that the cost per kWh for me is -3.9p! (Minus 3.9p/kwh). I’m also being paid the same rate for all the electricity I’m using in my house and to charge my solar battery.

I’m doing a 210 mile road trip today. Amazing to think that Octopus are paying me to take it!

While Octopus are paying me to use electricity today, everything my solar panels produce will be sold to the grid.

If you choose the right energy provider for you and if you have solar panels with battery, your energy costs can be very close to zero, especially if you drive an EV.

Isn't it the taxpayer who is paying you to use your environmentally damaging EV. Also remember you are polluting the atmosphere with nano particle emissions, and damaging the roads. Those of us who are more responsible and use traditional ICE vehicle are having to pay the penalties for your so called green misunderstanding of nature and economics.

Handbags... but he is right of course; which just goes to prove that everything politicians setup, is screwed!

Good for you. Hopefully you'll be storing some of that free energy to keep for next November's dunkelflaute. Save having to depend on burning imported gas to generate electricity to get you through those dark days.

They’re only paying you to take it off their hands because Storm Dave is spinning the turbines this weekend. EVs are the future just a shame that the upfront cost is so high.

And the embodied energy and cradle to grave relative environmental impact is still highly questionable.

To listen to sone EV owners, obe could almost believe that their beloved vehicles are made from non polluting peacock feathers and make the trip from the factory in China to the UK on the backs of sea horses

All that has happened is that the shit and pollution has moved from the UK to China etc

Anybody else get the whiff of self satisfaction & slight arrogance from this thread, bearing in mind a current fuel crisis?

Unless an individual lives off the land of their own labour & forage, wears a loin cloth and whose habitat is a mud hut then I’ll not take lectures from somebody with an energy intensive EV to produce and solar panels made in China.

Hypocritical to the extreme.

Over 400 Chinese EV brands have collapsed since 2018. Imagine being an owner of one of those.

Hundreds of thousands destined for the scrap heap.

A green solution needs vehicles which last a long time.

Just as well the OP only has to travel 210 miles. If he had to do 300 miles, he'd need to factor in a 30 minute charging break at 75p per kWh.

It's all free apparently. As long as you only drive on a Saturday and do exactly 210 miles.

I know someone who has solar and two batteries and a battery car. He is on Octopus and games the system. Charges car and batteries during day. Empties them to Octopus at peak demand in evening for a good price then recharges back at 3am cheaply. This pays financially but you need a smart meter to do it.

My approach is different. I want resilience. Im a petrolhead so run old interesting cars and an ebike. More interested in what happens when the grid fails due to over demand or failure to generate due to no gas supply which im sure it soon will. I installed solar last year with a battery to cover all hot water for 9 months a year and cooker lighting etc. Its not on smart meter so cant be rationed or switched off by the govt. and provides enough energy to run the oil boiler pump in winter and a few lights and telly etc. It pays for itself in ten years.

When old Battery cars become cheap enough ill add one on sorn as a sl.ve battery for extra oomph to the system.

All else fails the ebike will do 30 miles if I have to use it.

And don't try to put them out when they spontaneously combust, or is it an insurance scam?
