Saw Tin Machine in 1989 Newport Leisure Centre, south Wales, about 2k crowd, they were excellent.

Got to see Roxy Music at the O2 in October 2022 at their 50th anniversary show, a long held ambition.

It was great but would have loved to see them in their prime too.

Not sure about the session muso thing. Hunt and Tony Sales were with Iggy for a long time, no doubt where Bowie knew them from. No idea about Reeves, but I always got the impression Bowie wanted a proper rock band with Tin Machine, a gang of lads and not to be the star with hired hands.

I think with Tin Machine it was 1989 and he wanted to radically change the indifferent decade of 80’s output and it was a shock for fans/critics in comparison. So the question was had he completely lost the plot?

Scary Monsters in 1980 was probably the last of his decade long extraordinary output and the next 3 80’s albums pale in comparison but I actually love Let’s Dance.

The title track still sounds fresh, especially the extended mix with one of the best ever guitar performances by SRV.

Tonight is bad but even that contained the brilliant Loving The Alien and NLMD seems to be better now than I remember in 1987.

Part of me can't forgive Bowie for his take on China Girl which while it must have made his mate Iggy loads in royalties was a piss poor cover version.

Even though anecdotally it was just a throwaway song about Iggy's Chinese girlfriend at the time, I've always read volumes about American cultural imperialism into it, bearing in mind it was written not that long after Nixon's rapprochement with China and all the soft power of the quai loh, bringing them burgers and Coca Cola and blue jeans and shit television and men with eyes of blue who wanna rule the world.

Yes, well you would be much better informed than me as I always enjoy & admire your music critiques.

I was aware of the Sales brothers with Iggy as I love Iggy.

Probably not the best description as session musicians but they, and Gabrels, were better known via association.

Bowie just wanted to strip back and rock and Tin Machine were great, really invigorated him.

The two Iggy albums, The Idiot and Lust For Life are iconic. Iggy was never better (not even with The Stooges). He and Bowie were a team beyond greatness just in those moments. It's garage rock grown up and sobered up just enough but still with an edge.

Saw lots of bands in my youth, one that sticks out in my mind believe it or not is "Dr Hook" an amazing concert, proper entertainers. Forget "Sylvias Mother" some of their stuff was amazing.

The Pretenders

The Jam

Bob Marley & the Wailers

The Police

Other than Bob Marley I’ve seen each of those bands several times. Not seeing Bob is a huge gap in my concert-going memory bank.

"When you're in love with a beautiful woman, it gets hard"

That's one for the married men.

Long Eaton

Teen years was The Jam.

Then Indie emerged. Bluetones - difficult to find a tighter set live. Just brilliant. Cast, Carter USM, Sleeper, Smiths, Cure, Stone Roses Depeche Mode, Belle and Sebastian, Simple Minds.

Seen Beautiful South and Deacon Blue a large number of times - both bands made it a spectacle.

Camel, ELP, Barclay James Harvest, Renaissance, Stackridge, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Moody Blues ………….

I’ve seen them all play live apart from the Beatles.

I’m also old enough to have seen England win the World Cup.

I bet they were, no surprise for me.

I love Hot Chocolate, boy they could funk, and they were fantastic live.

Rest easy Errol.

"I had 3 stages of youth and bands

11 to 14 t.rex,bowie,roxy,harley

14 to 16 bowie harley,yes,bebop deluxe,hawkwind.

16 to 19 bowie ,harley, clash ,magazine, buzzcocks ,slaughter and the dogs ,japan

Great choices, mine would be similar.

I guess with name lol .

Compare roxy as a chart group to the groups now ,its laughable .

Great band, totally unique, but my idol is Bowie. And he was right through both our youths and far beyond.

We’ll never see their like again & we were so lucky to live it.

He changed the way i dressed, thought ,who i listened too ,even the girls i went out with .

I loved all bar 3 albums ,lets, dance, tonight, let me down.

Its always hard to choose a favourite but the 74/76 period of diamond dogs, young americans, staion to station and david live are my holy grail the music and style, hair.

I saw Bowie live when he was touring the Tin Machine album in 1989. Not everyone liked it but I thought it was fantastic, they were brilliant musicians, very rocky.

I liked tin machine and couldnt understand the backlash .i saw him on the outside tour,i was too young to watch ziggy and by the 76 -79 tours i was going to small punk gigs and sfter i dont like sradium and big venue gigs

I never saw roxy though ,saw ferry in the 90,s though ,saw iggy alot ,and the only punk new wave band i didnt see were pistols and jam .

I played and toured in a well-known punk band in the late '70s so you may have been at one of our gigs."

Give me the name .

I stopped going to punk gigs mid 79 ,got to violent
