First time with no faults except not knowing one Highway Code sign. Examiner suggested I was a very capable driver but I need to read the Highway Code. 2 weeks after my 17th, forty years ago and STILL haven’t read it.

My class one first time again with no faults although on my reverse I was watching my trainer who said ‘just get it straight and watch me in coffee room, when the cup is at my mouth you’re far enough and stop!’ 37 years ago.

I passed on my first completed test, although it was actually my second test.

On my first test a driver had a heart attack and that caused him to crash into the car I was driving, so my test concluded after about 10 minutes without a result.

Took me 3 goes to pass mine, finally in novenber 1982 I passed, on what I thought was my worst performance. 44yrs later, after a proffesional driving career lasting about 35 yrs, I've retired from driving for a living, with a clean driving license, I don't think I've done too bad, especially when I've been driving over 100,000 miles a year for far too many years. In fact I think I've only ever had a few speeding tickets, well 5 or 6, and no other offences. Well worth the 10 months of lessons at about £6 a lesson, and the 3 tests at about £20 a time in total. Yep, I know that sounds cheap, but when you're earning £36 a week, it didn't seem cheap at the time.

First time, 10 weeks after my 17th birthday. Parallel parked at the end and the examiner said he couldn't fail me because he didn't think I could get my car into that size of space and I did it first time. Goes back to my instructor's mantra of ' if you can't park it, you shouldn't be driving it '

Passed first time exactly a month after my 17th birthday. No theory test then and no long wait for a test. Set off for 6th form in my mum's Volkswagen Polo, with the stereo radio cassette on full volume and the sunroof open- I thought I super cool!

Yes, mine had a few hand signals, such as slowing down at a zebra crossing!

I kid you not!

3rd time.

Since then, not far off 40 years of driving and around a million miles driven.

(Have had a UK/European delivery business & cab driver in the past)

Never once had any endorsements or any at fault accident and a million miles is equivalent of about 40 trips around the world or about 2 trips to the moon and back.

1st time. Even dodged the dreaded emergency stop because a piss artist lurched into the road in front of me during the test and I braked and avoided him without endangering anyone else so the examiner said my awareness was on point and we didn't need to do that bit.

"Too embarrassed to say how many time before I pass my car test. Put a lot of it down to a bad instructor who made me nervous. Passed advanced first time and also motorbike first time."

My first instructor was terrible, really short fuse kind of bloke and I realised after about three lessons he was just stressing me out so found a much better one and passed first time as above.

Most of my lessons were done in a bog slow non-turbo diesel Rover 218, but just before the test my instructor got a turbocharged Citroen ZX and it felt like a rocketship to me

Sounds like mine. A stressy, bad tempered bloke. After a couple of failed tests I gave up driving for a year. I'd passed my motorbike test so had transport. Had joined the army by then and was driving all sorts of vehicles. Took the civilian test and sailed through it first thing on a foggy, icy November morning.

BTW I had to do an emergency stop and a hill-start as a result of a dog running into the road. The examiner was impressed.

I passed first time on my 21st birthday! Was a lovely present to myself. I hated driving lessons and was always incredibly nervous and used to hate it when that Corsa with the big BSM plastic cone thing would drive into the cul de sac. But it was worth it all those years ago.
