Something that really winds me up

On a ATM I use it gives you the various options two of which are ..cash withdrawal and balance..or just cash withdrawal.

When I select just the cash withdrawal I get a question..do you want to view your balance.

No I fucking don't or I would have chosen that earlier, now you're making press another button and it's taking longer!!!!

Tesco is the company, and they are going to the supermarket. So, unless they are looking into the accounts, then they are going to Tesco's supermarket. The implication is that it is the closest, and they have left off the word supermarket. IMHO Tesco's is correct for the supermarket and Tesco is correct for the accounts.

Agree..in effect the language has the feel of describing that you are going to a supermarket and you're differentiating it from others in that it's a supermarket that belongs to Asda or belongs to Tesco. Hence apostrophe and an S

It does feel quite natural

Your wrong and you don't got no reason to complain about there wording

In the context of using the name of a shop you are visiting, Tesco’s, Asda’s etc is the correct use even in the singular.

The word is being used as a possessive noun, i.e. the shop belonging to Tesco or Asda etc.

Hence even as a single shop, Tesco’s would be a correct word to use.

For example, if you had s friend called Steve, and someone asked where you were going, even though you were only visiting one person called Steve, you would still reply that you were going to Steve’s. That would be grammatically correct.

No, the ‘s denotes its possessive. So Tesco’s is the store owned by Tesco, Sainsbury’s is the store owned by Sainsbury.

It’s when they say “I’m going to Tescos” that you wonder why they would shop in multiple identical stores.

Your choice of words here is wrong - ironically! You’re not superior *educationally* if by your own admission you didn’t have an education past ten - what you seem to be trying to say is that your grammar is (apparently) more advanced than the person you’ve chosen to berate, at least in your opinion. But your grammar here is wrong.

To the OP if you are going to send me a message and give me shit at least have the balls to let me reply instead of blocking me

And maybe just maybe take a long look in the mirror before criticising others especially when you know nothing about them whatsoever

You don’t know what people are going through in their daily lives and the last thing they need is some jumped up small minded man who thinks he is better than anyone else coming on here and giving them shit

I’m all for banter and having opinions etc etc but it seems to me as if you created a thread just to have a go at others to possibly make you feel better about yourself 🤷🏻

As for me being “Northern” I can guarantee you we will do anything for anyone and certainly don’t go around giving people abuse just because of their lack of educational background etc etc

Grow up and try to be nice it’s not difficult!!!!!!

Agreed! If I am going into a property owned by Asda, I am going into Asda's building, so the apstrophe is correctly used. If I were going to Asdas I would be going to more than one of their shops. No can we all stop being stroppy about things of such little importance?

They are going to ONE store. Why would you go to TescoS to buy ONE loaf of bread for example? You’re only going to one shop.

"Doesn't bother me.

Indeed. The apostrophe denotes a possessive used as an adjective - short for eg Tesco's store.

It is however ironic that the incorrect use of an apostrophe to end a plural noun is known as the "grocer's apostrophe". This is due to the frequent appearance of notices advertising eg. "apple's ... banana's ... carrot's" etc.

And you can probably still get "Tea's", in many small catering shops that haven't been absorbed by the likes of Starbucks and Costa, and are still producing their own menus.

I never see the ‘grocer’s apostrophe’ and I think I’ve only ever seen it very rarely anyway on a barrow, let alone tea shop.

I seem to remember reading an article about this years ago but I was quite bewildered by it then as now.
