Now the ITV news this morning are advocating the need to stock up on food if the Middle East crisis gets worse.

Now watch the toilet rolls fly out the shops!

Plenty on here could do with eating less, so thats a positive spin on a terrible situation.

I saw that and thought that it was too sensationalist and was very lazy journalism.

In all likelihood there will be a reduction in choice rather than actual shortages of food.

Most supermarkets stock several varieties of fresh chicken; some from their economy range, some from their mid-range and some from their premium range, add in organic varieties then you have five or six types of fresh chicken to buy before you have factored the weight in. The food manufacturers and food processors will still produce their products but in all probability there will be less choice.

So the lack of choice does not mean a shortage of food.

It’s how Aldi and Lidl operate.

Aldi and Lidl are very clever.

There are Lidl stores in thirty countries.

How many British ones are there in other countries to match?

Fuck me! How big is your garden? And in London?

Where you get the time?

Growing veg is hardly time-consuming. Less than 5mins spent from insertion to plate...

The taste sensation... Unbeatable.

Waterlooville at night

I'm stocking up with warehouse clearance items. Morrison's have got some quite tasty sardines at 42p per tin. That's the cheapest I've found anywhere. Last week they had bags of carrots or parsnips at 4p per bag. Tins of Tuna for 45p.

The bargains from overstocking are around if you keep an eye open for them.

But the thread is about food shortages and the contributor said he grows his own vegetables, implying he would be unaffected by food shortages, essentially self efficient.

In the UK with weather challenges & the need for rotation which is intensive, I just googled, it’s estimated to constantly live off the land would require 100-200 sq m of land!

In London??

Yes, but I myself was replying to a contributor who implied they were self sufficient at growing vegetables & one needs to eat each day.

I’m only responding to expert growers in the UK who say it is possible but it would need a relatively huge amount of space, constructions like growing tunnels & green houses and it would be labour intensive and very difficult to do if one also worked.

Added to that living in London.

Be interesting if the contributor posts back to see how he does it.

You are not addressing the specific point I made re time/insertion/plate.

It is extremely disappointing. Brian Eno would have responded....

If we are talking about food shortages, then we should include hedgerow cooking.

Dandelion, bramble shoots and nettle tops are some of the healthiest vegetables, and are still in plentiful supply. They are also free.
